Macho Camacho versus Floyd, Arguello versus Floyd:Who Would Win?

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Now that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is apparently retired (or so he has declared), the historical book is now open to compare Floyd to some of the great fighters of the past. How would Floyd fair against the likes of Hector ‘Macho’’ Camacho Sr. and Alexis Arguello?

The first critical point to be stated is Alexis Arguello and Hector Camacho had super fighter status, and as such their names remain one cut above Floyd’s other opponents, including Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. Arguello and Macho mastered many weight classes as multiple world champions.

Floyd, in his era, should no vulnerabilities which could be exploited. Arguello and Camacho were fantastically skilled technical boxers. Camacho’s chin was never dented. Aaron Pryor found Arguello’s chin twice. Camacho could be outpointed, but witness his knockdown and stoppage of Sugar Ray Leonard and you realize how dangerous he was.

Floyd could have issues with either boxer, but Floyd’s ring generalship would have given him the edge on rounds in a close bout. Floyd ruled at 147 pounds. While Floyd was invincible at this weight, Camacho and Arguello would certainly have had a better chance if they fought Floyd at 140 pounds or less in the lower weight classes. In any case, at 12 or 15 rounds, Floyd would have outpointed Arguello and Camacho in a world title bout.

Floyd was an expert at putting rounds in the bank early, building a points lead which neither Arguello or Camacho could overcome in a long match. A younger Camacho could have given an older Floyd mucho trouble if he caught Floyd at the end of his career, as he did with Ray Leonard, and might have outpointed Floyd, depending on what point in Floyd’s career Camacho fought him.
