Golovkin wins via TKO in the 8th

By George A. Dampeer, Real Combat Media DE/DC Correspondent

New York, NY (October 18th, 2015)– Gennady “GGG” Golovkin improved his record to 34-0, 31KOs after a dominant display against a gutsy David Lemieux by a stoppage TKO in the 8th round. With this victory Golovkin now becomes the new IBF middleweight champion and lines himself up with a fight with the winner of Cotto vs Canelo.

The Madison Square Garden was buzzing as the fighters awaited in their corners trainers and entourages exited the ring. It was was finally released into cheers once the bell finally rang and the fighters rushed toward each other. One thing to note imminently was how Golovkin is noticeably the bigger man in size and frame. Perhapes this is why Gennady came out proven to establish jar early and very often to prevent the early bull rush of Lemieux. To say Gennady was popping the jab doesn’t describe it. He was blasting the jab, even moving back David to the ropes with a jab at one point in the fight. The power and the accuracy simply befuddled Lemieux’s attack early. Golovkin began set up shots with it and landed his bigger punches when Lemieux missed. Golovkin had begun to push Lemieux back and had David fighting off the back foot and it was clear that he could not sustain the Golovkin attack that way. With that said, when Golovkin landed his combinations he could not pour it on because to Lemieux still had some big punches for him to think about before committing to the attack.

The 5th round saw the first knock down of the fight with Golovkin landing a thunderous let hook to the body that gave Lemieux a delayed reaction and accompanied a hard right hand while he was down. The knock down will be note worthy for two things, one is the fact that David could have easily used that late hit as a way out of a fight that was not trending in his favor. The other being the reason why Golovkin was so committed to attack at that moment. Golovkin was reacting from a buzzing left hook from Lemiux that Golovkin unstable for a few seconds. Golovkin used good defensive moment to avoid David’s attack only to pour on his own almost like a punishment for landing that hard blow which resulted in the knock down.

By the 7th it an end to the fight was inevitable. Golovkin’s bazooka jab had busted Lemieux’s nose and continued to force him on the back foot only to react. At the beginning of 8th referee Steve Wills had doctors look at Lemieux’s nose but it was clear if it wasn’t for Lemieux continually fighting back Wills was very cautious the every shot. It continued late into the round with almost every punch Golovkin landed had hurt Lemieux being on retreat and bouncing off the ropes when he was cornered. He then bounced into another barrage of punches before Steve Wills called a stop to the fight that maybe Lemieux could have finished the round, but surely not the fight. It would have been pointless to let David get seriously hurt and continue which is why the early stoppage doesn’t really bother anyone besides him too much.

Golovkin now sits pretty in the middleweight division now with 3 belts now and a mandatory for another on the way. If the winner of Cotto vs Alverez refuses to fight him then he’ll get the title without the fight. Though the politics doesn’t make the situation likely; theres now pressure for a fight against Peter Quillin or Andy Lee in the near future as well. Golovkin could be the first undisputed champion since Bernard Hopkins within a year. One thing for sure is that from hear on, it’s only big fights for Golovkin. He will soon be approaching his mid-thirties and at this moment is in the peak of his prime. That’s why talking up a fight with Andre Ward serves no purpose since he is now fighting at 175 and it would make no sense to move up for that fight when there’s still business to be taken care of in the middleweight division.

Fight fans now wait upon the continuation of the Puerto Rico vs Mexico battle in November to see which one will be meeting the GGG next year. The winner of that fight better hope to win big and impressively because after the performance tonight, Golovkin looks the heavy favor against both.
