Richard ‘The Boxing Prophet’ Solomon’s Picks Of the Week (5/29/15)

By Richard Solomon, RCM Boxing Radio Panel-Host

Richard’s love of boxing preceded his love of solid food. Doctors report he came out of his mother’s womb throwing a jab. As a child he would only ever count from 1 to 10, and his favorite superhero didn’t wear a cape- he wore leather gloves that were A Thrilla In Manila. With his uncanny ability to predict fights, his parents gave up dreams of him becoming President and set their sights higher: Boxing Prophet.

His claim to fame: telling the whole world in Feb of 1990 that James Buster Douglas was going to beat Mike Tyson. Through jeers and laughs he stuck to his prediction. Rich was an overnight sensation. A folk hero in his town. The prophet was born. His parents wept.

For every 10 fights Richard predicts – he guarantees 8 out of 10 are correct. He prides himself on not only picking the winner of the fight, but also whether it’s by decision or knockout – being so bold as to even pick the exact round.
Richard went to Adelphi University and holds a Master’s degree in Special Education. He teaches preschool children with learning disabilities and special needs. His kids are fighters and Richard genuinely appreciates and nurtures that spirit in them.

Richard started his career on Adelphi radio in a weekly sports talk show and went on to co-host other boxing radio shows during his career. He is now the RCM Boxing Radio Co-Host since April 2013.

Amir Khan (30-3, 19KOs) vs. Chris Algieri (20-1, 8KOs)

Khan will be looking for a decisive win over Algieri to keep his name in contention for a possible bout with Floyd Mayweather.  Algieri is coming off of a merciless beating at the hands of Manny Pacquiao five months ago.  He hit the canvas six times and hardly resembled the fighter who scored notable victories over Emmanuel Taylor and Ruslan Provodnikov.  The former kickboxer with a master’s degree in clinical nutrition will be out to prove that he’s deserving of more high profile bouts and not merely a club fighter elevated to the upper echelon of his division with a couple of upset wins.  Part of his effort has included working with new boxing trainer John David Jackson.

Algieri does have the luxury as an underdog of fighting on his home turf.  The Long Island native has fought all but one of his career fights in New York.  However, none have come at the Barclays Center.  Algieri does not have any punching power.  This means he will have to outwork Khan and land more punches.  This is a daunting task because of Khan’s great hand speed.  Let’s also not forget that Khan has been in the ring before with excellent boxers such as Devon Alexander and Lamont Peterson.

Amir Khan has been better committed to the defensive and technical aspects of Boxing under trainer Virgil Hunter.  Khan proved against Alexander that he can jab and pick apart an opponent without putting himself in unnecessary danger.  He’s improved since suffering back to back defeats against Peterson and Danny Garcia.  Simply put, Algieri doesn’t have the tools to take advantage of Khan’s weak chin.

Algieri will probably look to control the tempo and range of the fight with his jab.  But he seems to have little in his repertoire to stop Khan from coming inside for quick combinations, before darting out of harm’s way.  Personally, I believe Khan needs to score a knockout win for boxing fans to again take him seriously as a “Dangerous” fighter.  Truth be told, I am rooting for Algieri to win.  He is a good kid with tons of heart.  More importantly, we are practically neighbors.  The victory party would be epic!!!!  Just don’t see it taking place.  Despite the possible distractions, it’s hard to think that Khan will lose.  He should score a couple of flash-knockdowns, but the fight will go the distance.  My Pick: Khan wins by Unanimous Decision.

Here are my picks for other fights taking place this weekend: Kell Brook (34-0, 23KOs) over Frankie Gavin (22-1, 13KOs) by a 10th Round TKO.  Jorge Linares (38-3, 25KOs) over Kevin Mitchell (39-2, 29KOs) by a 6th Round TKO.  Lee Selby (20-1, 8KOs) over Evgeny Gradovich (19-0-1, 9KOs) by Split Decision.  Anthony Joshua (11-0, 11KOs) over Kevin Johnson (29-6-1, 14KOs) by a 9th Round TKO.  Javier Fortuna (27-0-1, 20KOs) over Bryan Vasquez (34-1, 18KOs) by Unanimous Decision.  Heather Hardy (12-0, 2KOs) over Noemi Bosques (8-2-2, 2KOs) by a 4th Round TKO.  Marcus Browne (14-0, 11KOs) over Cornelius White (21-2, 16KOs) by a 5th Round TKO.
