“PBC Friday Night Fights on Spike TV Chicago”
By Zo Crooks-Ringside
Chicago, IL (April 25th, 2015)–There was an excitement in the air at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, IL for the Premier Boxing Champions. There was strong anticipation leading up to the fights after all of the trash talking at the press conference and the weigh in.
In the main event of the night PBC delivered an upset as TMT’s Badou “The Ripper” Jack outpointed Anthony “The Dog”Dirrell for the WBC Super Middleweight title. Jack was awarded the decision with scores of 114-114, 116-112, and 115-113. I had it 116-112.
Jack (19-1-1 12 KOs) pressured Dirrell (27-1-1 22 KOs) most of the fight. Jack aggressively came in behind a stiff jab and landed the harder more effective punches. Jack looked like the stronger fighter tonight. Once inside he ripped Dirrell to the body while pinning him to the ropes. Although Dirrell landed some decent shots as well he seemed to be frustrated at times during the fight.
This was the Gambian/Sweden native Jack’s best performance of his career. Just 14 months ago on ShoBox Derek Edwards TKO of Jack temporarily altered his plans on becoming a world champion and left him looking more like just another fighter. Tonight was a chance to show that he was more than just hype and he did just that.
For the Flint, MI. native Dirrell, he suffered the first loss of his career in his first title defense.
In the PBC co-main event, Daniel “The Miracle Man” Jacobs scored a TKO victory in the 12th and final round over Caleb “Golden” Truax.
Jacobs improved his record to (29-1, 26 KOs) in his WBA Middleweight title defense. The Brooklyn native easily out-boxed Truax through the first 11 rounds. Jacobs jab was amazing and seemingly landing at will against his opponent. Truax was game though, still coming forward while getting hit with shots. The Minnesota native landed a couple of good shots on Jacobs as well but nothing that ever put the champ in danger.
In the 12th round Jacobs landed a vicious shot that rocked Truax back while holding on to the ropes. Referee Dave Smith rightfully ruled it a knockdown. Jacobs then proceeded to close out the night with a barrage of punches, causing the referee to stop the fight. This was Jacob’s 9th straight win, all by knockout. Truax was also riding 8 straight victories coming into the fight.
In the first bout of the night for the PBC, Robert Garcia of Weslaco, TX (via Mexico) opened up the night with an 8 round unanimous decision over James Stevenson of Baltimore, MD. in a welterweight bout.
The first round had some excitement when Stevenson (22-2, 15 KOs) dropped Garcia (37-3, 23 KOs) with an uppercut about a minute into the fight. Garcia continued to be come forward, pressuring Stevenson the whole night. Earlier in the fight Stevenson used his jab and movement well but became fatigued in the later rounds.
The judges scored the bout 77-74, 78-73, and 78-73 all in favor of Garcia. I scored the bout 77-74. This was Garcia’s first televised bout.
