New York, NY (April 7th, 2014)–Frank Galarza scored big in his first main event on Saturday evening, April 5, 2014, in Queens, New York, at Resorts World Casino, his first bout under co-promoters Lou DiBella Promotions and New Legend Boxing. Galarza, now 13-0-2, nine knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, wasted no time getting down to business. In the first round, Galarza felt out the shorter Gonzalez with hard straight jabs which appeared to slightly rock Gonzalez with power each time they scored. It was an ominous observation for a bout destined to end with a ka-boom.

Near the one minute mark in round two, Galarza cutoff the ring and had Gonzalez in a corner, where Galarza landed a left to the forehead and a right to the body, sending the helpless Gonzalez face first to the canvas with a bang, where he got counted out by referee Eddie Claudio, who paused briefly only to pick up the count after the knockdown.

Gonzalez’ trainer Francisco Guzman was incensed after the bout, claiming Gonzalez got hit behind the head, and arguing the bout should have been declared a No-Contest. However, Galarza’s power punches were right on the mark, and Gonzalez appeared unable to get inside to hold in the brief bout, so the end was never in doubt.

Gonzalez, 16-13 with 10 knockouts, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is a journeyman who has been in with such notables as Luis Collazo, David Estrada, Sadam Ali, Ionut Dan Ion, Antwone Smith, Glen Tapia, Danny O’Connor, Eddie Hyland, and Dmitriy Salita. To date, Hyland is the only fighting Gonzalez has beaten outside the Dominican Republic. And Hyland appeared 25 pounds overweight when he lost to Gonzalez. To his credit, Gonzalez went the eight round distance with Salita and O’Connor. Gonzalez appeared in shape, but he was inactive for over a year, and appeared rusty, unable to put himself together to be able to counter.

With no replies to Galarza’s accelerating power shot offense, Gonzalez crumbled.

Result: Frank Galarza KO 2 Franklin Gonzalez, Light Middleweights

Time 1:00 of the Second Round / Referee: Eddie Claudio

In the preliminary bout to the main event, Rafael Vazquez of Brooklyn, New York, retain the World Boxing Association Fedelatin Super Bantamweight title with a fifth round knockout of Columbia veteran Manuel De Los Reyes Herrera. Vazquez, now 11-1, nine knockouts, knocked down Herrera in the second, and finished him with a body shot in the fifth round for the count. Herrera, now 21-13-1, 15 knockouts, has not won outside his native Columbia, though he has fought in the United States, Mexico, and Panama.

For New Legend Boxing promoters Felipe Gomez and Kevin O’Sullivan, a WBA world title shot for Vazquez could be forthcoming if Vazquez keeps defending his WBA regional belt.

27-0 Scott Quigg will defending his WBA World Super Bantamweight title in Lancashire on April 19, 2014, against WBA Interim Super Bantamweight champion Nehomar Cermeno, who previously held the WBA Fedalatin title before Rafael Vazquez. The winner could fight Vazquez in defense of the WBA world title belt later in 2014. Vazquez went into the bout with Herrera ranked number 14 in the world by the World Boxing Association.
