Bellator 117 Recap

Council Bluffs, Iowa (April 19th, 2014)– Bellator 117 invaded Council Bluffs, Iowa free on SPIKE TV. Jordan Parsons was able to earn a KO victory over Tim Bazer just four seconds into the second round. Julio Cesar beat Josh Arocho via TKO 2:37 into the second round. Anthony Smith taped out Victor Moreno 59 seconds into the second round. Joe Vedpo got a TKO victory over Ben Crowder 48 seconds into the very first round. Martin Brown got a unanimous decision victory over Jared Downing. (30-27; 30-27; 29-28)

Derek Campos kicked off the main card when he faced off with Patricky Pitbull in the lightweight tournament. Round one was a slow start but Campos was able to control the round as he landed several shot on Pitbull. Patricky was able to land some hard lefts and also a head kick but Campos answered head kick for head kick. The second round was much different with Pitbull coming out and dropping Campos in the first 30 seconds. He followed with some good ground and pound moving into full mount and getting the TKO victory shortly thereafter. So Patricky Pitbull will move on to the finals of the lightweight tournament.

David Gomez and Karl Amoussou took the cage next in the welterweight weight division. Amoussou came out with guns blazing in the first round as he was able to control the distance with his strikes. Was able to get in and out of the pocket quickly before Gomez was able to land anything big. Although Gomez was able to catch him with an over hand right as Amoussou jumped in to grapple. Round two started off with Gomez coming out quickly and attacking. He was able to land so big shot until Amoussou got a take down and went for a heel hook. Gomez was able to roll out and get back to his feet and landed two great left hooks to close the round. Amoussou was able to control the third round as he held Gomez against the fence for most of the round. Gomez had no answer for Amoussou in the last round he just tried to cover up and throw some knees. Karl Amoussou took home the split decision victory over David Gomez. (29-28; 28-29; 29-28)

Derek Anderson took on Marcin Held in the other semifinal match in the lightweight tournament. It took Held just 42 seconds to get the take down and start looking for a leg look. Anderson was able to with stand the attempts and continue to land some good shots and the two rolled. Anderson was able to end the round on top landing big punches. Marcin came out and exchanged punches and even dropped Anderson to start off the second round trying for takedowns throughout the round. He final was able to dive in and land one with about two minutes left in the round and eventually was able to earn the tap out victory with a triangle. He will move on the finals of the lightweight tournament to face Patricky Pitbull.

Douglas Lima took on Rick Hawn to see who would go home with the Bellator welterweight world title. The first round started slowly with Hawn working angles and Lima punishing his lead leg with kicks. Lima was able to drop Hawn with a leg kick but let him back to his feet to drop him with a knee to the head which not only hurt Hawn but cut him as well. Lima wasn’t able to finish the fight before the horn sounded though. Lima came out in the second round and continued to punish the lead leg of Hawn knocking him down four times in three minutes. Referee Rob Hinds told Hawn’s corner if they wanted the fight stopped they had to throw in the towel which they did right away. Douglas Lima takes home a win due to corner stoppage along with the Bellator welterweight world title.

Houston Alexander also fought Matt Hude. Houston earned a TKO victory due to doctor stoppage after the second round. Also Ryan Jensen submitted Mark Stoddard with an arm-triangle choke.
