No One Gets Out of Here Alive, Canelo Alvarez versus Alfredo Angulo Preview. IBF Champ Carlos Molina Arrested on Old Warrants, Officially Off Tonight’s Showtime Card
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
Las Vegas, NV (March 8th, 2014)– As Alfredo Angulo fights in the killor be killed style of Roberto Duran in his prime, and his main event fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is a career do or die crossroads bout, somebody is bound to get knocked out in a fight of mega proportions like this.
The title ‘No One Gets Out of Here Alive’ comes from the 1980 autobiography of Jim Morrison by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugarman. On Saturday evening, March 8, 2014, a nine bout card of boxing will be presented at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada by Golden Boy Promotions.
The Pay-Per-View portion of the Showtime card will include: a ten round lightweight bout between lightweights Sergio Thompson and Ricardo Alvarez; Leo Santa Cruz defending his World Boxing Council Super Bantamweight title against Cristian Mijares in a 12 rounder; and the light middleweight 12 round main event between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, the former WBC and WBA World Light Middleweight champion, and Alfredo Angulo, the former WBO World Light Middleweight champion. Ricardo Alvarezis the brother of Canelo Alvarez.
IBF World Light Middleweight champion Carlos Medina will not be on the card. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed an immigration hold on the boxer in the Clark County Detention Center. In addition, was arrested due to two outstanding warrants dating from 2005 and 2007 in the state of Wisconsin.
The odds have closed fast in Canelo Alvarez versus Angulo. The bookies have evidently begun to realize Alvarez versus Angulo could be more of a brutal war than originally realized. Part of the problem is Canelo remains untested. He exceeded himself when he defeated Austin Trout, his first decent win on the world classlevel. At age 23, he remains untested against a scrapper. Canelo’s bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2013 was a media blitz bonanza and more hype than fight. Canelo took the mega payday, but showed absolutely nothing against Floyd in losing a majority decision.
Angulo, age 31, in contrast, comes to die. He beat up Erislandy Lara and knocked him down twice. However, Lara worked over Angulo’s left eye and got it to swell relatively quickly, earning a stoppage over Angulo in the tenth round.
Angulo comes to die. To defeat Canelo and win, Angulo must get inside on Canelo and grind him down. Angulo is a grinder, who works his way inside and beats the meat out of the meatball. Angulo is in a no choice situation, he must get inside and work Canelo over, knock down a few times, and then stop him, or his career is effectively over. A win over Canelo would rejuvenate Angulo’s career and expose Canelo as a limited fighter.
For Canelo to defeat Angulo, Canelo has to use his jab all night, keep it working fast and furiously, and keep Angulo out of range with superior hand speed foot movement. More than likely, Angulo will take the fight to Canelo and turn it into a toe-to-toe war, not letting Canelo run away and forcing the issue. Angulo, following the game plan of Marcos Rene Maidana ion his win over Adrien Broner, must and will take desperate chances to take the fight to Canelo and slug it out.
Angulo is willing to die in the ring, and in the style of the great ‘Hands of Stone’ Roberto Duran, Angulo is willing to fight the style fight which could lead to both Angulo and Alvarez dying in the ring, or dying on the way to the nearest hospital. The odds are close in this style fight. The win goes to the fighter who can execute his game plan and carry it out to perfection. Angulo will win by stoppage in 11 rounds, or Canelo will win by 12 round unanimous decision.
Angulo knows he will never get a decision over Canelo in Mexico anyway. This reporter is in disagreement with Kevin Iole, Yahoo Sports writer, who wrote earlier this week he feels Canelo Alvarez is not Alfredo Angulo’s greatest challenge. With all due respect, this reporter feels Canelo Alvarez IS Alfredo Angulo’s great challenge, because he must grind Canelo down and stop him and take the fight out of the hands of the judges and the scorecards.
Alfredo Angulo will enter the ring a wounded lion seeking to redeem his pride. The fighter who wins will have a better emotional and physical plan of attack to break the other fighter down. Saul Alvarez versus Alfredo Angulo is a complex bout which could be the fight of the year, if the brutal vicious war the bookies believe will happen actually happens. Canelo may have to fight Angulo in the center of the ring to the bitter death, and fight fans might be in for a real treat. Angulo has to win. No retreat and no surrender. Canelo has to fight.
Technically, Canelo could work Angulo over. Both hearts will be tested. In the end, only one fighter, in a bout of mega implications like this, will be left standing in the ring.
Canelo’s corner has stated Angulo’s style made him the perfect comeback opponent. In this reporter’s view, Angulo is the worst possible opponent for Alvarez. The reporters who state Alvarez won’t be afraid to mix it up with Angulo should have their heads examined. If Angulo succeeds in getting inside, Canelo will be a bloody mess with nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. Canelo will have to stand and fight Angulo’s fight, and beat him at his own game. Can he? That is the unanswered question of Canelo when Angulo tests him to the max.
