Brown shines bright in title bout victory at WXC 44: Independence

Written by: David Doig

Warrior Xtreme Cagefighting rolled into Crystal Gardens in Southgate, Michigan on Saturday night. When all was said and done, not a single chair was left attended due to the fireworks inside the caged walls that the crowd had witnessed. Champion Moe Shatri and Challenger Deven Brown waged a war of epic proportions and came away with Fight of the Night honors after a night filled with submissions, technical knockouts, three title fights and only three fights that saw the judge’s scorecards.

After a brief feeling out process, Brown and Shatri started throwing leather much to the crowds delight. After one stuffed takedown, Brown persevered on the next and started to work his ground game. After little success, Brown backed off as the first round ended. During the second round, Brown showcased his control after getting another takedown and keeping the fight on the floor during the course of the allotted three minutes.

Shatri started the third off a bit more refocused by landing shots on the feet and scoring a takedown. That only seemed to upset Brown as he quickly got up and scored a takedown of his own leading to Shatri taking a heavy fire from the bottom. Not to be deterred, Shatri got his wits about him and rose to his feet only to have them taken out of underneath him again. At this point, the crowd was going nuts!

Brown started off the fourth round as the aggressor, firing off unanswered jabs at the beginning. As Sharti tried to clinch and bring the fight to the floor, Brown sprawled brilliantly and swiftly took his opponents back. Brown went for a rear-naked choke, rolled over and a bloody Shatri had no choice but to surrender his Lightweight Title at the 2:21 mark.

“I was surprised how good my stand-up was against a striker like Moe. I was really on point and it felt good to be able to go toe to toe with him,” Brown said after his victory. “I could hear the crowd behind me and they gave me the power I needed to win this fight. Now I’m going back to training hard for the next one.”

Jesse Bazzie of Courageous MMA and Chris Bohacek of Stars & Strikes fought tooth and nail over the course of five rounds to determine who was going to take home the WXC Flyweight Title. Bohacek showed superior boxing in the first round and took the second round with amazing submission attempts and ground control. Bazzi, knowing he was down two to none, came out with a purpose in the third. He dropped Bohacek early and tied him up against the cage to start things off in his favor. After a restart due to inactivity, Bohacek scored a takedown and landed in the mount position. He couldn’t get any submissions out of it but defiantly clouded the judges’ decisions on who took the round.

Both started to fade during the fourth round because of a hard fought bout and constantly scrambling to impose their will on one another. Bazzi clinched with Bohacek to start the fifth and final round; pulled guard quickly and went for a few chokes but was unsuccessful. Chris reversed the position but ended up stalling the fight. Bazzi scored a takedown but Bohacek held on to finish the round. The official result came as the judges awarded Chris Bohacek the Flyweight Title by a unanimous decision victory.

Lauren Foley of Daron Cruickshank Prodigies won the women’s Strawweight title by defeating Scarred MMA’s Christianna Daniels by technical knockout inside of two rounds. Daniels looked to score with kicks and punches in the beginning. Foley scored a takedown which led to a competitive ground battle for position to finish the first round. Daniels continued to implement her striking and Foley decided to turn the tables by scooping up one of her opponent’s legs and landing a huge slam. Foley worked Daniels over to the cage wall and started a heavy barrage of punches. Daniels tried to move out of the trap as best as she could but referee Ben Lagman decided he had seen enough at the 1:38 mark of round two. A technical knockout victory was awarded as Lauren Foley became the WXC Women’s Strawweight Champion.

An early Fight of the Night candidate saw Woodhaven’s Justin Walls take on Josh Cuilla of Grand Master Bey’s IDC Gym in Detroit. Walls boxed and bloodied up Cuilla throughout the first round. The second round looked to be going the same way for Walls until he got reversed on a badly timed takedown attempt. Cuilla changed his fortunes quickly by securing Walls’ back and holding on tightly to a fight winning rear-naked choke. Cuilla was awarded the Submission of the Night by Promoter Norbert Pasztor and Matchmaker Michael Pedenelli.

Malky Berlin from DC Prodigies won Knockout of the Night honors as she scored a brutal third round technical knockout over Katelyn Yaremko of Courageous MMA. It was Berlin’s superior footwork and boxing technique that won her the fight. Yaremko hung in there tough but was clearly out worked by the “Bad Broad” Berlin. Berlin especially wanted to thank her boxing coach Johnny Glover for the speed and power. Stating, “All the ladies at 115 pounds better watch out!”

In other exciting fight’s that occurred during the evening, Middleweight Willis Black scored an upset TKO over favored Andrew Crushshon inside of two rounds. Featherweight Dave Pardon defeated Keith Bullock by unanimous decision in another FOTN worthy performance in which both fighters left it all in the cage. Ultimate Judo’s Brandon Noble defeated Monroe’s Brad Brown by TKO in a highly anticipated grudge match.

Jesse Robertson from Harley “The Swede” Wallen’s Four Aces MMA defeated Wayne’s Brent Derosia by submission in a hotly contested Bantamweight bout. The crowd witnessed a rare heel hook submission when DC Prodigies’ Mitchell Bartes submitted Team Cage Rage product Nate Ellison in their Featherweight match up. Eric Rodak defeated Andrew Foley with an excellent guillotine choke in the second round of their Welterweight contest. Lincoln Park’s Anthony Morse defeated Detroit’s Marcus Wheeler via TKO and Allen Park’s AJ Suski kicked the night off by defeating Wayne’s Jacob Klotz via unanimous decision in a close Lightweight affair.

The next WXC event is set to go down on August 23, 2013 in Detroit.
