Yoel Judah Interview: Views on Sons Daniel and Zab, and Floyd in Las Vegas
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent
New York, NY (May 10th, 2013)– In a Real Combat Media international exclusive, former professional boxer and kickboxer Yoel ‘The Lion’ Judah, one of boxing’s finest trainers, and the father of boxers Daniel, Josiah and Zab Judah, gave his views on his sons in the ring, and his take on Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s recent win over Robert Guerrero.
Yoel Judah is forever remembered for the madness which erupted in the ring on April 8, 2006, at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, during round nine after Zab threw a low blow on Floyd Mayweather, then hit Floyd behind the head, whereupon Roger Mayweather came into the ring to go after Zab, whereupon Yoel entered the ring and went after Roger, and referee Richard Steele lost control of the ring as a riot erupted. Zab was fined $250,000 and had his Nevada license revoked for one year. Yoel had his trainer’s license revoked and was fined $100,000.

Real Combat Media: “Your son, light heavyweight southpaw Daniel Judah, is scheduled on Make A Fight to box an eight rounder at cruiserweight on June 29, 2013, in Haines City, Florida. Daniel has lost seven fights in a row and has been knocked out three times since 2008. Did you have anything to do with Daniel taking his latest fight?”
Yoel Judah: “I had nothing to do with Daniel’s last eight fights. Daniel’s been losing because I ain’t been in his corner.”
Real Combat Media: ” If Daniel loses next month, he will have lost eight fights in a row. Do you think Daniel should retire, give his streak of consecutive losses?”
Yoel Judah: ” If Daniel gonna keep taking these fights and (he) continues to lose, Daniel should get out of the game and leave boxing alone!”
Real Combat Media: “Your take on your son Zab Judah’s loss at Barclay Center to WBA and WBC Light Welterweight world champion Danny Garcia? Zab fought a brilliant 12 round fight, losing by decision.”
Yoel Judah: “Zab did not have me in the corner. His corner wasn’t good. Everyone who saw Zab’s corner at Barclay Center said Zab’s corner was a mess. If he had me out there in charge of the corner (at Barclay Center) Zab would have knocked Danny Garcia out.”
Real Combat Media: “What were the training circumstances surrounding Zab’s title fight preparations for Amir Khan and Danny Garcia? Is there more to the story?”
Yoel Judah: “For Danny Garcia, Zab trained for eight weeks in Las Vegas with a new team. For Amir Khan, who Zab lost to, I did not train Zab either. Zab trained with Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker, who had a drinking problem at the time.”
Real Combat Media: “You watched Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s recent victory at age 36 over Robert Guerrero. What factors do you believe contributed to Floyd’s success?”
Yoel Judah: “Floyd is a smart boxer. He had his dad in his corner. He outworked Guerrero, he got his shots off, punching sharp, and he avoided getting into a battle.”
Real Combat Media: “In your view, can anybody beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. now?”
Yoel Judah: “To beat Floyd, it’s gonna take somebody really masterful, with good hand speed and power, who can stay on top of Floyd and take him out of his comfort zones. Once Floyd gets his jab off, he’s gonna beat you.”
Real Combat Media: “Why do you think your sons won’t go back to training with you, if training with you would put them back on the winning track.”
Yoel Judah: “Kids think they know everything. I tell them you don’t as much about boxing as me. I have a lot of fighters I’m training in the gym right now. I have to get back to work.”
Real Combat Media: “Yoel, thanks for taking the time to speak with Real Combat Media.”
