Road Warrior Got Lost in the Land of a Grove

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

London, UK– ( December 16, 2012) At the press conference the day before his bout with George Groves, Glen ‘The Road Warrior” Johnson stated he hoped for a rematch with Bernard Hopkins after defeating British super middleweight prospect George Groves.

The ‘Road Warrior’ got lost in the land of a grove….George Groves of London.

With his fourth consecutive decision loss, Johnson, 43 years old, should reretire for good and call it a day. Against Groves, the WBO # 2, WBA # 5, WBC # 6, IBF # 7 and BoxRec # 12 world ranked super middleweight contender, Johnson could win only one round on one of the three judge’s scorecards.

Groves, with a 75% knockout ratio in his 16-0 pro record, as it turns out has gone the 12 round distance before. Groves defeated 10-0 James DeGale by 12 round decision in May 2011, by scores of 115-114, 115-114, 115-115.

Johnson, now 51-18-2 with 35 kayos, and a loser of five of his last six pro bouts, is still ranked # 18 by Boxrec among super middleweights. At least, in his bout with Tavoris Cloud in 2010, Johnson won four rounds on all three judges scorecards. Against Andrzej Fofara, Johnson won three rounds on two scorecards. Against Lucien Bute, Johnson won only one rounds on three scorecards. Against Carl Froch, Johnson earned a draw on one scorecard at 114-114.

Muscular though he still appears, Johnson was a shell of his former self, looking for a payday after his once formidable boxing skills have eroded. His physical condition is still good, but his reflexes and timing are shot, like a Rolex without the guts inside.

Johnson took such a beating from Groves in the seventh round, the bout could have and probably should have been stopped. But it wasn’t. And so the crowd got its money’s worth and more……………if you were rooting for the British fellow.

As if humiliation was not bad enough, Groves knocked down Johnson in the twelfth and final round. Johnson somehow found the final bell, but it was an ugly payday. For the road warrior, it was a bitter end for such a respected champion. For Groves, the bout was not a test, it was an abomination and probably should not have taken been allowed. British boxing fans may have enjoyed the torture, but it’s not boxing.

As for Groves, a win’s a win-but defeating old Glen Johnson does not raise his stock.
