Irish Seanie Monaghan is on the Rise

By Robert Brizel, Ring Combat Media Correspondent

This past October 2012 at Roseland Ballroom in New York City, Lou DiBella fighter Irish Seanie Monaghan successfully defended his World Boxing Council Continental Americas Light Heavyweight title with a ten round unanimous decision over rough tough experienced Pennsylvania trial horse Rayco Saunders. Monaghan used lightning fast hand and body one-two and one-two-three combinations to head and body, moving in and out with good head and foot movement all night, and kept Saunders off balance on the defensive. Saunders was unable to chase the fast moving Monaghan. Saunders attempted to lure Monaghan into a counterpunch war, but it never worked, as Monaghan slipped many punches, and caused Saunders to swing wildly into empty air. Saunders, whose physique looks like Mr. Olympia, attempted only straight jab counters, but could not land much.

Irish Seanie Monaghan is a fighter on the rise. He is currently ranked 22nd in the world by the WBC.

Monaghan, who is 16-0, 10 knockouts, Long Beach, New York, has improved in his ability to diffuse and penetrate the defenses of upper echelon fighters with scoring power shots and straight opportunities which sends his opponents on the defensive.

Monaghan was able to win nine of ten rounds easily against a dangerous opponent.

Monaghan was a bit cautious in his approach to Saunders. According to Monaghan, “I was waiting to see if Saunders would slow down, but he never did. So I just kept punching, punching, punching, till I lost track of the rounds and time. Saunders is a very good fighter with a very good defense. This is the kind of ring work I wanted.”

Monaghan, rising a bit late in the boxing game at age 31,  has shown himself to be a game fighter since his professional debut in New York City in 2010. Look for Monaghan to fight a major television fight under the DiBella banner in 2013.

Monaghan is one of several WBC regional belt titleholders in line to get a shot at the winner of the upcoming World Boxing Council vacant Light Heavyweight title bout between Chad Dawson and Jean Pascal being held on March 23, 2013 in Quebec, Canada by virtue of the fact Monaghan holds the WBC Continental Americas belt.
