Shamone “The Truth” Alvarez – Older, Stronger, Faster & Wiser Man!

By: Pattee Mak

[September 14, 2012 – by Pattee Mak]    On September 29, 2012, Global Boxing Promotions and Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc. will be promoting live professional boxing at the Resorts Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  I had the pleasure to speak with welterweight Shamone Alvarez (21-5-0, 12 Ko’s) of Atlantic City, New Jersey concerning his upcoming co-main 8 round bout against Decarlo Perez (7-2-1, 2 Ko’s) also of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Pattee Mak:  Good Morning.

Pattee Mak:  I recently ran into you over the summer and you were looking for your next fight.   In a few weeks you’ll be fighting Perez.  AC boxer vs. AC boxer.  How did this bout come about?

Alvarez:  Actually he’s a Pleasantville fighter.   There is a rivalry between both cities.  I’m from the city, he’s from the ville. He’s black and Puerto Rican and I’m black and Puerto Rican.   This is the 3rd time that he wanted to fight me.  The 1st time I said no, the 2nd time no again and during that fight he got knockout out and he fought someone 1, 2 and 1 or 1, 2 or 2 and 2  and not to talk to talk bad in a bad way but his opponent didn’t have a lot of fights.  He then fought after that. I wasn’t watching him and all of the sudden it happened again. This is the 3rd time Will, his trainer, called me. For this particular fight I need to have a good win and somewhat of a decent record.  Everything fit.  Him being young, strong and hungry, it all caused me to take the fight. I had two other offers to go somewhere else to fight.  But I wanted to stay home and fight. We basically live near the same boroughs, it’s respect. This kid sparred with me and all that stuff. They come to our gym and work out. I have no beef with him. Will now has pushed it too far. I got to do what I got to do as a man. That’s how it came about.

Pattee Mak:  Now I’m sure Perez will be bringing his fans that nite.  Will you be distracted in any way?

Alvarez:  No not at all. I don’t care what happens outside the ring. I only hear the corner. I don’t hear other people screaming or yelling.

Pattee Mak:  What do you know about Perez’s style of fighting?

Alvarez:  He’s young, he’s strong, he comes to fight.   I know his camp so I have an idea what they are working on. I have a pretty good understanding of his camp and how they are going to fight me along with seeing him previously spar.  Who he is and what he is gonna try to do. I know how to counter that.   I’m going to make him change his mind what he should be doing.

Pattee Mak:  Are you still training with Arnold Robins?

Alvarez:  Yes along with Bill Johnson and Howard Hurt at the Atlantic City PAL in Atlantic City.

Pattee Mak:  Being that you are both from the same area.  Have the 2 of you sparred against each other?

Alvarez:   Yea maybe about 5, 6 times at the most.  Just in regular stuff.   Usually people are coming to Atlantic City for boxing. We were there.  He worked out.  I watched him work out and I’m pretty sure he watched me. We have had no issues or dislikes that I’ve known of. Will his manager/trainer for some strange reason he has a thing for me. I understand if Carlos beats me it’s a good thing for him. But he isn’t going after a title so I don’t know why he wants to fight me. He probably feels he can beat me.

Pattee Mak:  Patrick Majewski (19-1-0, 13 KO’s) will be the main event on this card and he also resides in Atlantic City.  Have the both of you been doing any sort of training for this up coming fight or roadwork together?

Alvarez:  No sparring but we talk a lot. Mentally he is a part of my mental completion.  He knows Will and Carlos, he understands how I understand it. It’s a power move for Will if Carlos beat me.  It’s kinda like Puerto Rican attitude stuff.

Pattee Mak: Your last fight was on 10-22-2011 against Doel Carrasquillo at Tropicana Hotel and Casino.  You lost by TKO in the 5th round and it was reported you were down in rounds 1, 2 and 5.  What happened in that fight?

Alvarez:  Everything that I was supposed to do I did it but I wasn’t consistent with it. I lost weight. I’m getting older and I can’t loose weight like I used to. Why for last 3 fights I was able to pull off the weight.  I was loosing the weight so with the whole Carrasquillo thing I had an off day and it really caught up with me in a fast way.  Ugh… I wasn’t able to move around like I should have.  But I have a nutritionist now, Scott Tull. He got my diet and weight under control. I’m back to how I was when I was 22, 26 years old.  He actually got me back on track with that.  That was my problems with my last 5 fights. But at the same time it isn’t like I was any younger.

Pattee Mak:  Now since that fight against Carrasquillo it’ll be almost a year since you last fought.  Now, Perez has fought twice in 2012 and five times in 2011. Do you believe he could have an advantage over you?

Alvarez:  He has a small advantage and with him being younger. But going back to the first thing I know his trainers, I worked out in the same room with him. Sparred with him and being the older man & me being the wiser dog, I’m getting back to where I was at. I let people down. It doesn’t mean nothing that he fought continuously.  I’m older, stronger, faster and a wiser man in my opinion. I know my longevity in the sport is going to help me out. He could be overconfident and it can be a handicap.

Pattee Mak: Your first loss was against Joshua Clottey on 12-20-2007 in Vegas.  You fought 6 more fights.  You won 2 and lost 4.  We need to get you back on track.   Why do you think you have lost those 5 fights?  Your record was perfect up until 07.

Alvarez:  Well against Clottey I don’t think I lost. I fought the wrong fighter in that town.  It was some boxing and some stay away.  Ummm like I said I was having weight problems and I was eating wrong.  Along with everything else that comes along with a one on one sport. Loosing people that were not supporting you, all that comes along with one on one sports.   Even though it didn’t affect me at that time during the fights it all came to my shoulders. Not that I that I was having a break down but just the regular basics of sports, as in me not eating the right kinds of foods messed me up. I allowed it to mess me up.  During those times of combat I let it all get to me. I didn’t do the right things at that time.  Why I’ve a loss, a loss, that’s life. My last three I know what it is. I was trying to hard. Trying so hard. Longevity. Cutting weight.  It was all affecting me. I believe it was my downfall. Kinda like how an amateur fighter goes thru middle stages in their career. Win, loose, win, win, loose, loose, win, win, loose, you are evolving. I guess it was my evolving stage. I never had that 14, 15 year old amateur career. I was always behind in the scene. 19 ½  was when I started boxing.  Me getting to top and trying to get back on the hill and falling off.  It was a learning process and I had to understand what I had to do all the time.

Pattee Mak:  You are a southpaw. Do you find it hard to find an opponent? I know some fighters won’t fight southpaws.

Alvarez:  No. I don’t think so. I think a lot of guys think it’s overrated. They feel they have the science how to fight a southpaw. I’m older and I don’t think I have a problem but yes earlier in my career it was difficult.

Pattee Mak:  Your ring name is called “The Truth”…. How did it come about?

Alvarez:   I was like 10-0 and I was beating everyone up. You’re the F’in truth.  I’ll never forget Charlie Brown saying “Yo man you are beating the guys up. You’re the truth” and it stayed with me.

Pattee Mak:  You were signed with Star Boxing.  Is it true that you are no longer signed with them?

Alvarez:  Yes as of now I’m not under contact with Star Boxing. The contact was up.

Pattee Mak:  Are you keeping your options open and looking to get signed with someone else?

Alvarez:  Yes I am.  I will definitely be interested to sit down and talk with another promoter to see what they have to offer and present to me.

Pattee Mak:  The last time we spoke you were telling me about your day job.  Which job is harder boxing or working with youths?

Alvarez:  Both are evenly challenging.   Either way you look at it. One kid doesn’t want to go to school or not go home. For boxing you got to get up at 4, 5 am to run and then be at the gym.  They are both even and have tranquil points.

Pattee Mak:  Anything you would like to say to your fans out there?

Alvarez:  I’m back and don’t give up on me yet. I’m Back.  This year and into next year you’ll see more of me.  I’M BACK!!! And I’m ready to get back where I was 5 –6 years ago.

Pattee Mak:  You sound like a determined fighter who is ready to get back in the ring and fight.   Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me.  It’s going to be an exciting line up of fighters. You’ll have to let me know the outcome.

Alvarez:  Thank you.
