Wladimir Klitschko vs Tony Thompson Recap

By: Jon Campbell

Last night in Switzerland Heavyweight champion Wladimir Kitschko (58-3) comes out again and takes out another top contender in Tony Thompson (36-3) in a fight which ended by knockout in the 6th round. Following the bout commentators have criticized the Heavyweight division due to the dominance of Wladimir and lack of adequate opposition. I am sure Kitschko makes no apologies for this and I do not blame him. He is simply way too good and today (like any other) I continue to give the man his dues and proclaim his greatness.

The fight transpired very similarly as I expected. Kitschko used his superior strength, skill and general craftsmanship to break down the good yet much less able challenger. He won every minute of every round and at times appeared to be landing shots at will. Admittedly it was not a massively exciting affair as the bouts usually are not in terms of action and ferocity, but I struggle to see how watching a master of his craft at work taking down one of the best is such a one-sided fashion cannot constitute excitement.

What was surprising to me was the fact that Thompson did not survive 6 rounds as I thought he would. I believed he would last till every late in the fight but it appeared that Wladimir was a bit more forceful than we usually expect of him and when he realized he completely outmatched Thompson decided to get him out of there with a flurry of straight punches which put Thompson down. He managed to get up before the count but was visibly not fully composed forcing the referee to wave it off and end proceedings.

Many commentators of the sport will never be impressed of the Kitschko’s due to circumstances out of their control, simply the fact that nobody in the division is fit to lace his boots to be blunt. These commentators however by criticizing the division for its failure to tackle or even put up a fight with such competent, talented and physically exceptional fighters are wrong. This is because it is deflecting praise away from those who rightfully deserve it and projecting disrespect to all the top Heavyweights in the world who are good and credible fighters, such as Thompson, yet are not up to the standards of the champions.
