Victor Ortiz vs. Josesito Lopez Recap

By: Tony Stewart

Everyone knew that this fight would be a telling fight for several reasons, more so for Victor Ortiz. However I don’t think anyone but a few most die-hard fans expected this fight to evolve into the kind of drama we were treated to Saturday night. This fight could not only become a candidate for fight of the year, it most assuredly would be the no. 1 choice to date for upset of the year.

Saturday, June 23, 2012, “Vicious” Victor Ortiz and Josesito Lopez fought for the vacant WBC Silver Welterweight Championship of the World at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Victor, no stranger to controversy, who was the obvious spot lighted talent on stage in this fight.  To add to the peculiar aura of this fight, Ortiz while he was fighting this night, was confirmed to a scheduled future fight against Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez. Josesito had stated that he felt he was being overlooked by everyone. He was hungry and intended to shock the world…and he did.

Josesito Lopez hosted a record of 29 wins with 4 losses, 18 wins by KO. While his record was on a par with Ortiz’s record of 29 wins, with 2 losses, and 22 wins by KO. He simply did not have the big name fights on his ledger that Victor obtained. This would be Josesito’s biggest fight and first fight at this level. He was considered by most a very solid ‘B’ level fighter and was now facing is first test against an ‘A’ level fighter.

This fight would begin with Ortiz and Lopez feeling each other out in the center of the ring which was a surprise in itself and might have betrayed a greater respect for Lopez’s boxing and punching ability. It was expected that Ortiz would began early in trying to impose his strength on Lopez. Ortiz elected to work behind his jab in the first round while Lopez was waiting to counter Ortiz with a strong right hand. Josesito Lopez would land two left hooks against Ortiz to close the round which looked to slightly wobble him.

Round 2 would sound the temperature of the rest of this fight. Each man decided to come out with no more feeling out process as both fighters waged war and landed heavy shots against the chins and body of each other punctuating the intensity that was beginning to surface in the air for everyone watching this fight. Josesito is focused on making sure everyone sees that he is the real threat in the ring and not Vicious Victor Ortiz as he lands a solid left hook again that seems to get Ortiz’s attention.

Round 3 would be a continuation of the same as both men began to throw with more abandon. Ortiz lands a slew of punches that rock Josesito’s head back causing Lopez to tie him up to smother the punches from Ortiz. Then he unleashes his own combination of punches which sting Ortiz’s chin again, making statement after statement that he is not only a very game challenger but he possesses the heart and skill to evenly match this ‘A’ level fighter.

Round 4 Victor Ortiz is attacking the body of Lopez much more vigorously intending to staunch Lopez’s flurry of action. Lopez, a consummate professional and shows how versatile he is against such an onslaught swings and turns Ortiz on his own punches to void the impact of the some of the shots while trying to intelligently counter him.

Round 5.  Both men come back out for the fifth round and are applying pressure trying to push the other back. The drama surfaced when in a flurry of action Josesito landed a left hand and bent to avoid Ortiz’s counter punch and while bent over Victor takes opportunity to hit Lopez in the back of the head. Lopez goes down to one knee and the ref gives him a 5-minute recuperation moment while he sternly warms Ortiz against and further occurrence of inadvertent ‘dirty’ tactics. The round resumes and it’s clear that Lopez is still unsettled after having been down to a blow to the back of the head. Lopez finishes the round strong and wins the respect of the fans.

Round 6 Victor is bringing out the ‘Vicious’ in this round and is throwing punches with a vengeance. He is intent on putting hurt to Lopez’s body with uppercuts and hooks to the body. Lopez showing his resolute will to endure was able to weather the storm of punches to the body and tied up Ortiz and countered him on occasion.

Round 7
Could be considered the strongest round of the fight. Both men landed a multitude of strong punches against the chin of each. Both men were giving and taking evenly. Lopez would land a set of sharp left hooks rocking Victor’s head back and Ortiz landed his own strong hooks. However the momentum to the punches thrown clearly swung in Lopez’s favor as he became the stalker for the second half of this round.

Round 8
This round would see both men nearly even in punches thrown and landed again, mirroring the ebb and flow of the bout thus far. Ortiz is fighting as the star who is facing a guy who is committed to giving his best. While Josesito is doing exactly that, giving the best fight of his life in every round.

Round 9
Even though Lopez weighed in lighter and is considered the less of the stronger fighters, it’s clear he’s gotten the full respect of Victor Ortiz. As this round Ortiz is looking to again land strong power shots to dissuade Lopez from his committed perch in the fight. Lopez has a slight edge in power punches thrown thus far in the fight and Ortiz unleashes a fast set of combination punches to the face of Lopez bouncing him into the ropes. Not only do the punches have little to no effect on Lopez he waves Victor as if to say you can’t hurt me.

Following this round, Victor Ortiz decides not to come out for the 10 round citing a broken jaw incurred in the final moments of round 9. Josesito Lopez win’s the WBC Silver Welterweight championship and a TKO win over Victor Ortiz.

What a magnificent fight by a game opponent who seized his opportunity producing what is sure to be the upset of the year and probably one of the most significant fights of the year.
