Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine Results

By: Michael Alexander

While the news of Strikeforce’s 145lb female champ Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos being stripped of her title due to her use of PEDs shocked the MMA community, Strikeforce was able to work past the bad press and brought in the New Year nicely with a very entertaining card that showcased the underappreciated talent on their roster.

In the Main event, Luke Rockhold proved that his win over Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza was no fluke with a dominating TKO victory over Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine at 4:26 of the first round. Rockhold showed crisp kicks, powerful punches, and overall dominated Jardine the entire time.

Most people believed that Jardine didn’t deserve the title shot to begin with, due to coming off a tie and moving down from LHW to MW, and he showed that tonight he just doesn’t have it anymore. He couldn’t keep up with the speed of Rockhold and just looked sluggish, probably because he ended up dropping 19 lbs in 24 hours! It was a disappointing loss for Jardine, who is going to have to take a good look at what to do with his career now.

In the Co-main event of the evening, “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler overcame an illegal knee from Adlan Amagov to win by a flying knee TKO at 1:48 of the first round. Lawlor was on his knees, against the cage, when the illegal knee occurred. Lawler was in need of this strong win, losing three of his last four bouts prior to his win last night. This also marks Amagov’s first loss since 2007.

The last big name fight on the card showed Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal in a strong TKO win over Lorenz Larkin at 1:32 of the second round. It was the King Mo show the entire fight, showcasing his superb wrestling game and vicious ground and pound. It all came to a boiling point in the second, when Lawal was raining down blows on a clearly unconscious Larkin. Referee Kim Winslow stopped the fight, albeit much later then what would have been ideal and letting Larkin take an unnecessary amount of damage. With this win, King Mo looks to rematch either Gegard Mousasi or Rafael Cavalcante.
