Daniel Gonzalez and Father Time Decision Michael Anderson for USBA Title at Prudential Center. Heavyweight Joey Dawejko TKOs Himself

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Newark, NJ (October 15th, 2024)– In the main event of a 12 bout Rising Promotions card at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, Daniel Gonzalez, 22-4-1 with seven knockouts, Queens, New York, won the vacant International Boxing Federation USBA Welterweight title with a unanimous 10 round decision over game Michael Anderson, 24-4-12, Edison, New, Jersey.

Gonzalez, nine years younger at age 34, outworked Anderson, who came into the ring in surprising top condition at age 43, and displayed a solid defense, but whose offensive output was limited. Gonzalez made no mistakes, and won the bout by outpointing Anderson on the move. The ring was not cut off, and the bout went round and round the ring edge in circles.

Anderson stopped Marklin Bailey and knocked out Eudy Bernardo last year, however Gonzalez, whose record includes a 10 round loss to former world champion Chris Algieri, had a better quality of opponent. Anderson was in the house, but Gonzalez made no mistakes, preferring to outpoint Anderson on the move. Anderson put his heart on the line, just could not defeat father time. For his age, Anderson gave a great accounting of himself. He just didn’t win many rounds. Real Combat Media fairly scored the bout 98-92 for Gonzalez.

Result: Daniel Gonzalez Win 10 Michael Anderson, Welterweights

Gonzalez wins vacant IBF USBA Welterweight title

Scoring: 100-90, 99-91, 99-91 Gonzalez.

In the preliminary to the main event, HAVOC Bantamweight Khalid Twaiti, 14-0 with five knockouts, Brooklyn, New York by way of Yemen, solidly outpointed Emmanuel Rodriguez, 15-3 with eight knockouts, Berlin, New Jersey, with scores of 99-91, 99-91 and 98-91. Real Combat Media scored the bout 99-90 for Twaiti. Rodriguez, bleeding from the right eye, appeared to be fighting in the wrong weight class after losing weight to make weight. Rodriguez would do better to move up to super bantamweight or featherweight.

In an ugly display of play the villain, seasoned Albanian heavyweight Kristian Prenga, 16-1 with 15 knockouts, Orosh, Albania, did not fall for the sucker traps set by veteran Joey Dawejko, 28-13-4 with 16 knockouts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On arrival in the ring, Daweiko began flailing his arms and making faces, triggering the ire of the pro-Albanian crowd, who booed him all night. Dawejko continued to wave his arms towards the crowd during the bout and at the end of the round, trying to bait Prenga into making an emotional mistake.

Dawejko can hit, and Prenga, well-prepared for this bout, remained as defensive as Dawejko, throwing careful tap punches while keeping his defensive guard up. No punches were landed during the first for rounds, with Prenga doing some minor body work which did not move Dawejko. The end came in round five, when Dawejko, reaching forward with a left jam which hit Prenga on the right forearm, hyperextended his left arm and either broke it or pulled the muscle, sending Dawejko crashing to the canvas in pain in a corner. Referee David Fields called off the bizarre bout at 0:41 on the fifth round, giving Prenga a fifth round TKO win. Dawejko stopped himself, but not the boos of the crowd. Whatever his intended game plan, psychological warfare did not work. Prenga is a tall towering heavyweight, and Joey could not find the target on this occasion.
