Tank Davis, Boots Ennis, and Boo Boo Andrade, Capital One Arena Card Preview

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Washington, DC (January 5th, 2023)– On Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., a 13-bout card will be presented by Showtime Pay-Per-View and Premier Boxing Champions, featuring Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, and Rashidi Ellis in featured scheduled 12 round bouts, and Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade in a scheduled 10 rounder.

The southpaw Davis, 27-0 with 25 knockouts, Baltimore, Maryland, will defend his World Boxing Association regular World Lightweight title in the 12-round main event against Hector ‘El Androide’ Garcia, 16-0 with 10 knockouts, San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, the World Boxing Association regular World super Featherweight champion.

In the news recently, the girlfriend of Davis, Vanessa Posso, mother of his daughter Giovanna, had Davis arrested last week in Florida, and charged with one count of domestic violence/battery for smacking her with a closed hand, after calling 911 and stating “He’s going to kill me.”However, Davis, released on one thousand dollars bail, responded by uploading graphic images on social media, alleging that the violence was meted out by his girlfriend Vanessa Posso on him instead, who has accused him of domestic violence. Davis claimed that Posso spat on him and stuck his toothbrush in poop. Posso, 34, an Instagram influencer and model, has over 717 thousand followers on the platform, where she often posts fashion-related videos and images. She is also a brand ambassador for Fashion Nova, She is also a businesswoman, and created the jewelry brand RichGirlz, which currently has almost 40k followers on Instagram. The brand claims to “specialize in body chains and sterling silver jewelry since 2010.” Posso also offers a range of skincare products on her website.

Posso subsequently retracted her allegations, stating “These past (few) days have been hurtful, and extremely exhausting for all parties involved. I pride myself on being extremely private. This situation was the last thing I wanted to be made public. The state of our relationship has been in a fragile space, and Gervonta and I were both at fault for the argument. While the emotions were running high I made an unnecessary call to law enforcement in an intense moment, while I was frantic. Gervonta did not harm me or our daughter. Today, we have sought the help necessary to move forward with our lives. I am confident we will succeed within or (in a) co-parenting dynamic with counseling provided to us.”

Davis is predicted to retain his title by 12 round unanimous decision in a competitive bout, and is also predicted to get his domestic charges dropped in the Broward County Courts a few weeks after the bout is over, if he behaves himself.

Top-ranked welterweight Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, 29-0 with 237 knockouts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is predicted to win by fifth or sixth-round stoppage over Karen Chukhadzhian, 21-1 with 11 knockouts, Karlsruhe, Germany, by way of Kyiv, Ukraine.  Ennis has had trouble finding opponents, as well as finding Errol Spence Jr., Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia, and Terence Crawford. At least Chukhadzhian has the nerve to show up for this interim International Boxing Federation World Welterweight title bout. Spence will have to fight Ennis if Ennis wins, unless the elusive Bud Crawford signs to fight Spence first.

The 12-round welterweight contender bout between Rashidi Ellis, 34-0 with 15 knockouts, Lynn, Massachusetts, and Roman Villa, 25-1 with 24 knockouts, Rosario, Venezuela, is too close to call. It could end in a majority draw or split decision either way. No title is at stake.

Ellis is poised to win by a controversial 12-round split decision. Villa could surprise, but it will be tough for the Venezuelan Villa to get the decision on foreign soil. If Villa controls the ring and outworks Ellis, then Villa will get a 12-round majority decision. This bout is the best matchup of 2023 thus far.

The southpaw former World Boxing Organisation World Middleweight champion Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade, 31-0 with 19 knockouts, Providence, Rhode Island, will return to the ring at super middleweight after over a year of inactivity, against Demond Nicholson, 26-4-1 with 22 knockouts, Laurel, Maryland. In April 2021, Nicholson became the first person to not get knocked out in the first round against 16-0 Edgar Berlanga. Nicholson survived the eight-round distance with Berlanga but did not win any rounds. Andrade is predicted to win by 10 round decision, though this reporter still feels Andrade is better off at 160 pounds fighting at middleweight, rather than aiming for a mega fight with Saul Alvarez later in 2023.

The Baltimore-native Davis will return to fight in D.C. for the first time since 2016, as he headlines a stacked pay-per-view lineup against the dangerous and streaking Héctor Luis García, needing a win to pave the way for the recently announced blockbuster clash against unbeaten star Ryan Garcia in the Spring of 2023.
Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday from Marriott Marquis Washington, D.C.:
GERVONTA DAVIS
“We trained hard. He’s been saying some things that have turned me up. You definitely don’t want to miss this one. We’re going to make sure this is a tough fight for him. Don’t get no popcorn during this fight. Keep your butt glued to the seat. I promise you it’s gonna be fireworks.
“This is my job. I’ve been doing it since I was seven. I know that a lot comes with it, but if I stop now, then I wouldn’t have done what I came to do.
“D.C. has always been exciting when it comes to boxing. There’s a lot of talent here that people sleep on. It’s a boxing town and I’m excited to come back and be fighting here. We used to have to get through D.C. to get to the national level in the amateurs, so I always treated this place like a second home.
“Garcia earned his spot in this fight for what he’s done this past year. He’s been in good fights and beaten good fighters. He’s not someone to sleep on. He’s a tough opponent and this is going to prepare me for a Ryan Garcia fight next.
“I just want to put on a great performance in front of a nice crowd and show everyone that I’m one of the top guys.
“There’s been a lot of talk from other fighters in the division. I’m putting them on notice with this fight and the Ryan fight. I can’t get to Ryan unless I get past Héctor. I’m showing everyone that I’m one of the elite guys.
“The last thing I want to say to Héctor is just, be ready. I’ve had a great camp and I know that Héctor’s coming. Just don’t make a lot of mistakes, because if you make too many, it might be an early night.
“This is a stacked card. Saturday night, boxing wins. From the first fight to my fight, you don’t wanna miss it.”
HÉCTOR LUIS GARCIA
“My camp could not have been better. My team is tireless, and we work so hard. Everyone is going to see the results on Saturday night.
“I feel equally comfortable at 130 and 135 pounds. I took this challenge because I always want to surpass my own limits and go after the very best. At the end of the day, it’s up to me to be at my best on Saturday night.
“The bottom line for me is that I can fight at whatever distance the fight requires me to. I can use my reach or my power. I’m going to be ready.
“I think the back and forth we’ve had is normal and in good fun. It brings more heat to the fight and it probably motivates us both more.
“Gervonta better watch out on Saturday night. Because he lit the competitive fire under me when he put his hands on me during the face off.
“The real Garcia is right here. I don’t care who he’s focused on, because I know that I’m the true challenge. Fans are going to see a thrilling fight. It’s going to be a show that everyone is gonna enjoy.”
JARON ENNIS
“This win can put me right in line for Errol Spence Jr. This is a perfect time to make a big statement and I can’t wait.
“I’m looking to make a statement to the whole world. I’m just focused on putting on a show, getting an explosive knockout and then seeing what’s next.
“I’m on my ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson. I don’t go in there looking for the knockout, but if I see that opening, I’m definitely taking it. I’m not afraid to get him out early. Everyone knows I’m in and out like a robbery.
“I’m putting my own twist on Tyson. I picked up a few things from watching Tyson, so this is gonna be a fun night. I’m going to be explosive with it.
“My message to the world is just continue to watch me grow and progress and make sure you don’t miss this knockout on Saturday night. Philly is definitely gonna be in the building.”
KAREN CHUKHADZHIAN
“Jaron is a very strong fighter, but we’ve trained very well ourselves. I’ve worked with a lot of different fighters in sparring and we have a good strategy. I’m here to fight and win.
“This is my chance to prove myself to the U.S. public. Everyone knows the biggest fights are here in the U.S. and I plan to be back again.
“I’ve wanted an opportunity like this and I’m very motivated finally being here in the U.S. I’m coming to win for everybody rooting me on in Ukraine.
“I can’t get caught up with worrying too much about Ennis and what he can do. I have great abilities and I trained hard with only one goal in mind. That’s winning on Saturday night.”
RASHIDI ELLIS
“I’m coming to take over the 147-pound division and show I’m the big dog in this division. We’re always ready and Saturday is no different.
“We’re going to see who’s top dog. Villa is in here talking crazy, so I’m going to have to beat him down for it.
“Everybody knows what I want to do. I want the smoke. Give me the best fighter available and I’m gonna get into that ring.
“This is a great stage for me to display my talents. I know that I’m the future of this division, I just need the opponents in front of me that will let me show the whole world.
“You could definitely say that is the biggest fight of my career, but at the end of the day, I’m treating this like another shift at the office. I’m coming to work.
“This is gonna be a great fight. He’s a strong, tough guy who’s gonna come forward and try to hit me with a lucky punch. If he wants to fight differently against me, then I’ll be ready for that too.”
ROIMAN VILLA
“Talk is cheap. Whatever he wants to say, he’s entitled to it. But I’m all about coming here to do my job and give the fans the show that they want to see. You’ll see the action in the ring on Saturday night.
“I’m no fortune teller. I’m just going to control what I can control and let it be what it may be. I’m 100% ready for this fight.
“I’m confident in my training. I’m much more prepared this time than I was for last victory, so my belief is sky high. If Ellis is underestimating me, he’s going to be in trouble.
“I come here to represent not just my country, but the whole Latin community. We’re here to make them proud and that’s what we’re going to do on Saturday night.
“I studied in school, I’m not here to study anybody. I’m going to come after him and be aggressive. No matter what happens, I’m going to be myself.
“I want to stay humble, but I want to see if that smile that he’s got on his face right now will remain after Saturday night.”
DEMETRIUS ANDRADE
“I’m just bringing even more talent to a stacked division. We’re here to give the people what they’ve been looking for, including all of the big fights.
“The message I’m sending is that the best fighters need to fight each other. There’s nothing standing in the way anymore. It’s time for us to get in the ring and make it happen.
“Everyone says they’re coming to make a splash, but I prove it every single time when I step into the ring. I’m going to do what I always do and that’s win.
“I hope he brings the pressure. I’m ready for whatever. If he says this fight isn’t going the distance, then I guess he’s going down.”
DEMOND NICHOLSON
“My goal is to dominate and win whatever way possible. I’m shooting for the moon. It’s my time now.
“I can’t be humble right now. There’s no time for humbleness. Everyone is saying I’m a tune-up, but this is the first fight I’ve been 100% healthy for.
“Everyone is going to see my skills. On January 7, my new life and my career starts. I’m not worried about his talking, I let my hands talk for me.
“He hasn’t fought me yet, so he can forget about Jermall Charlo. He’s doing this thing where he’s talking about facing other fighters, but he has to beat me first. I’ve got a built up frustration about it. You’re never supposed to look past the next man.
“I have to apply the pressure. Pressure bursts pipes. This fight is not going the distance.”
STEPHEN ESPINOZA, President, Sports & Event Programming, Showtime Networks Inc.
Gervonta Davis vs. Héctor Luis Garcia is the first big boxing event of 2023 and the first of many high stakes quality matchups we’re putting together on SHOWTIME. Davis is taking a huge risk against a fighter like [Héctor Luis] Garcia. He’s one of the hottest fighters in boxing and a candidate for 2022 Fighter of the Year.
“This will be ‘Tank’s’ 13th time on SHOWTIME and fifth time on pay-per-view, and by now we know what to expect. Every time ‘Tank’ fights, he is must-see TV. He has sold out arenas in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Baltimore and Brooklyn. His last fight in May was the most attended combat sports event at Barclays Center. If you look across boxing for fighters with these kind of attendance numbers, you can count them on one hand.
“From established veterans to some of the best young fighters in the sport, this is a fantastic card from top to bottom. Make sure you get there early, and we’ll see you there.”

Davis made the donation Wednesday alongside Delano Hunter, the Director of the Parks & Recreation Department and Danielle Hunter, the Roving Leader Manager for the department. Here is what the fighters had to say from the Kennedy Recreation Center in Washington, D.C.:
GERVONTA DAVIS
“This means a lot. I’ve actually fought in this gym before as an amateur. I’m happy to be home in front of a great crowd. I know that Hector Luis Garcia is going to come to fight and we’re going to give the fans what they want to see.
“Garcia did what he had to do to earn this fight. He beat a top contender and then won the belt. Giving him the shot was the perfect timing for everyone. He’s earned his stripes.
“Our main focus is Hector Luis Garcia. We know that he’s a threat to everything I want to do. The goal is to put on a great performance, nothing else.
“Coming up through my whole career, back to the amateurs, I had to fight in D.C. if I wanted to get to the nationals. I’ve been fighting in D.C. forever and it’s like a second home to me.
“Calvin Ford is family. My trainers have been like dads. They’ve been in my corner since I was eightyearsold. We’re definitely a tight unit.”
HECTOR LUIS GARCIA
“It’s going to be all about how the fight starts out. I respect him and I know what he can bring, so I’m going to have to study him and see how the fight shakes out in the first few rounds.
“I know that I have an advantage with my reach. It definitely could be a factor in this fight. But at the same time, I have to take the fight moment by moment and be attentive to every detail. It’s so important against an opponent like Gervonta especially.
“This fight is not only important to me, but to the whole Dominican Republic. I’m going up against one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and I know that I have to be ready for that challenge. I’m coming to show the world that superstars can fall too.
“I can guarantee that the Dominican Republic will be proud of me. Our flag will be raised up high. Everyone can expect a great performance from me on Saturday night.
“I’ve been fighting since I was 14yearsold and I come from a very small province in the Dominican Republic. I’ve had to earn everything I’ve ever gotten. This is a great opportunity and I’m ready to capitalize.”
JARON ENNIS
“I’m feeling great and ready to go. Training camp has been great. I’m in tremendous shape and I’m 100% ready to rock and roll.
“I’ve got a lot of motivation and I can’t wait until Saturday night. I feel like this is another step toward greatness and getting those belts.
“It’s not hard to be the next guy up. I just have to stay focused and do what I do. I know my time is coming real soon. It’s that simple.
“I know Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford are holding up the division right now, but whatever way I can get my hands on the belts, I’ll be ready. I just want to fight. I’m young, hungry and I’m going to keep shining and demolishing these guys they put in front of me.
“Getting knockouts gives the fans what they want and makes them keep gravitating toward me. As long as I keep doing what I’m doing, my fan base is just going to grow.
“I know Spence says he’s the ‘big fish,’ but we like to go fishing. If I have to sit on the side and ride a jet ski for a while, that’s okay for now. You know what happens when they bring a fish to land right? They squirm.”
KAREN CHUKHADZHIAN
“People pay to see a great fight, so I’ve been training hard in order to deliver that. I want all the fans to remember that I bring action to the ring. I’m coming to win this fight for everyone back in Ukraine.
“I’m coming here to win. If he wants to avoid going toe to toe, then I’ll be ready to box. If it’s a battle on the inside he wants, I know that I can win that way.
“I know that Ennis is a good fighter, but my focus is on my abilities and what I can do in the ring. I’m very confident. I have everything I need to win this fight.
“It’s very motivating to be fighting in the U.S. for the first time, and on a big stage like this. My goal is to keep coming back for bigger and bigger fights.”
RASHIDI ELLIS
“I’m ready for any of the top dogs. I’d step in there right now with anyone in the top five. Ideally, I’d fight the champions, but right now I’m ready for the best man available.
“I feel like it’s my turn now. Especially after January 7. I think everyone is going to see that I’m coming to take over.
“We’re going to have to see what Villa brings into the ring. He’s a come-forward fighter, which can be a difficult task for some. He’s gonna have to show me in the ring. I don’t think he’s going to be able to just walk me down.
“I see a lot of things that I can do in there, that I don’t think he’s capable of. I’ve been the best kept secret, but I’m not a secret anymore. I’m here now.
“I don’t really have any rivals yet because nobody wants this action. Nobody wants to get in there with me. I’d love someone to talk trash with and make the fights even more exciting.”
ROIMAN VILLA
“I’m very thankful for this opportunity to step into the ring on Saturday night. I’m beyond excited to show the whole world what I can do against Rashidi Ellis.
“I wasn’t as prepared for my last fight as I wanted to be, but I still got the victory. Right now, I’m feeling really good and more prepared than I’ve ever been.
“I’m extremely confident heading into this fight. I don’t care if people say that I’m the underdog, because I believe in myself and I know what I can do. It doesn’t matter what Ellis can or can’t do. I believe in myself and my abilities.
“Anything is possible with a victory in this fight. I’m willing to step into the ring with anybody. I trust my team, and if they want me to face Jaron Ennis next, then bring it on.”
DEMETRIUS ANDRADE
“I jumped on the opportunity to be on this card with all these young stars. I know everyone is coming to do what they do, and I’m gonna set the stage right. I respect what Nicholson can do and I know he’s leaving it all in the ring. But my skills will speak louder than my words.
“I was trying to get the big names at middleweight, I was knocking on everyone’s door, but at the end of the day, it didn’t happen. Everything happens for a reason, and I believe that this is the best division for me.
“At the end of the day, all the fights at the top of the division will be tough. I would have to look real close to break down who the biggest challenge is, but I’m giving them all credit and acknowledging that they’re all gonna be tough fights when we get in there.
“I want to give the sport what they’re looking for. Because that’s also what I want with myself. Me and Jermall Charlo have had this rivalry brewing for years. It’s nothing but respect, but I want to take care of it in the ring. Who else is calling him out the way I am?
“I want the Charlo twins, I want David Benavidez and Caleb Plant. I’m ready for anyone who wants to put on a big show.”
DEMOND NICHOLSON
“Andrade definitely has an awkward style, but I’ve been boxing my whole life. When it comes to skill and timing, it wasn’t hard for me to prepare. You’ll see that on Saturday night.
“This is definitely the biggest stage I’ve been on, but it’s not my first rodeo. I’m not really motivated by the crowd, I’m more just excited to get this victory.
“My advantage right now is that I’m mentally more prepared than he is. I’m feeling as strong mentally as I ever have in my career.
“I’m not thinking about anything past this fight. It’s only Plan A now. From here on out, I feel like I’m staying at this level. This is where I belong.
“For this whole entire training camp I’ve been envisioning the victory. I’ve been playing it in my mind over and over again. The doors are wide open now. It’s all about taking it Saturday.”
VITO MIELNICKI JR.
“We had a great training camp with ‘Chino’ Rivas and now we’re just ready to put on a show. I’m excited to be back in a position to showcase my talent on a big stage.
“The 154-pound division, and the divisions around it, are all really exciting. There are a lot of top guys and eventually the big fights will be able to get made. Right now we’re in the growing stage of my career and we’re going to keep learning. When the time comes, we’ll be ready.
“Everyone goes on their own path in this sport. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Sometimes you see fighters rush and their career doesn’t go the way it should. We’re going to take our time. We’ll know when it’s time to take that next step.
“I’m in great condition because I’m always staying in the gym. I stay ready because you never know what type of opportunity might come your way.”
