British Boxing and Sports Postponed Due to Passing of Elizabeth II

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

London, UK (September 10th, 2022)– Claressa Shields, Savannah Marshall, Mikaela Mayer, and Alycia Baumgardner, part of what was to be a historical British all-women’s first of its kind professional boxing card, will have to wait for their moment in the sun. “God Save the Queen!” is a famous spoken expression in the British language. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at age 96, after 70 years and 214 days of rule over the United Kingdom and its British Commonwealth realms. Speaking from Buckingham Palace on Friday, September 9, 2022, King Charles III, 73, stated in a prerecorded message to his nation and the world that “In her life of service, we saw that abiding love of tradition together with that fearless embrace of progress which makes us great as nations.”

Operation London Bridge, a ten day period of mourning activities leading to the succession to the throne of King Charles III, will feature a carefully orchestrated and detailed plan, including gun salutes, bells tolling across the land, and millions gathering to pay tribute. Flags on official buildings will fly at half-staff, while flags in London’s Parliament Square and the Mall will be dressed in black crepe and tassels. A service of thanksgiving takes place at St. Paul’s Cathedral although the new king is not expected to be there.

As funeral arrangements develop, and Great Britain and the United Kingdom are entering an official period of royal mourning for Queen Elizabeth II, all amateur and professional sports, the all-women’s Saturday, September 9, 2022, boxing card at 02 Arena is London has been rescheduled for October 15, 2022, at 02 Arena in London. All football (soccer) games scheduled in England, Scotland and Wales have been postponed. The undisputed world middleweight title fight between Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall, and the unified world super featherweight title fight between Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner are among the major female world title bouts which are on the rescheduled 02 Arena card.

British Boxing Board of Control General Secretary Robert Smith announced Friday all United Kingdom sports shows would be postponed this weekend. His official statement: “The British Boxing Board of Control decided all tournaments (scheduled sports competitions) this weekend will be postponed as a mark of respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We join as a nation in mourning, and pay tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, honoring her dedication to our country during her long reign, and the legacy (of achievement) she leaves behind.”
