Mexican Underdog Meneses Upsets Maxwell, Wins IBO World Super Lightweight Title
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Making only his second appearance outside of Mexico, and his first appearance in the United Kingdom and in a world title bout, Mexican underdog Alejandro “El Tocino” Meneses dropped favored Sam Maxwell and stopped him in the ninth round to win the vacant International Boxing Organization World Super Lightweight title, in the preliminary to the main event at Echo Arena in Liverpool, United Kingdom, on April 22, 2022.
Meneses, 16-5 with nine knockouts, Tecamac, Mexico, made toast out of the face of Maxwell, tattooing it all night with overhand power right hands which took the bark and the bite out of Maxwell’s enthusiasm. There was no mercy for Maxwell, now 16-1 with eleven knockouts, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom, who would not pull a rabbit out of the hat as he did in his last second tenth round knockout of showboating Sabri Sediri in Leicester Arena in March 2019 in the final seconds of the bout.
A Meneses overhand right hand in the ninth round put Maxwell on all fours, his second time on the canvas in the bout. Meneses eventually trapped Maxwell along the ropes and battered him senseless and defenseless, forcing referee Andre Van Grootenbruel to call a halt to the bout at 2:39 of the ninth round.
Maxwell still holds the BBBofC British and Commonwealth British Empire Super Lightweight titles, and will now have to defend them or both titles will run vacant.
In the main event, the “Baby Faced Assassin” Paul Butler, the current WBO International Bantamweight champion, 34-2 with 15 knockouts, Ellesmere Port, United Kingdom, outpointed Jonas Sultan, 18-6 with eleven knockouts, Cebu City, Philippines, by 12 round decision, to win the interim World Boxing Organisation World Bantamweight title. Sultan holds the WBO Inter-Continental Bantamweight title. Scoring went three ways but unanimous 118-110, 117-11, 116-112 all for Butler.
