Cardiff, Wales (February 6th, 2022)–Swedish southpaw top 15 heavyweight contender Otto Wallin, whose only loss was a controversial 10 round decision in November 2019 to Tyson Fury at T-Mobile Arena in which Fury required 47 stitches, remained in the hunt for a world heavyweight title rematch with Fury, by scoring an eight-round unanimous decision win over 38 bout British journeyman veteran Kamil Sokolowski, at Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, on Saturday, February 5, 2022, on a nine bout card featuring Chris Eubank Jr.
Wallin, 23-1 with 14 knockouts, Sundsvall, Sweden, return to the ring after 365 days of inactivity, and got in eight rounds of work in what appeared to be a good sparring session workout over Sokolowski, now 11-25-2 with four knockouts, Barnstable, Devon, United Kingdom. Sokolowski has gone the distance at eight rounds or less 31 times in his career.
Wallin has height and reach advantage, and simply came forward with his jab and appeared to win the rounds on points. The referee generously gave one round to Sokolowski. On his record, Sokolowski has unset George Fox, Ellis Machin, Alex Dickinson Sean Turner, Adam Machjaj and Taylor Ball, all unbeaten prospects, and drawn with unbeaten Carl Spenser and unbeaten Dominic Akinlade. Sokolowksi has also defeated several fighters with winning records, including Noureddine Meddoun, A.J. Carter and Nick Webb. Sokolowki has fought 22 unbeaten fighters, and all but one of his 38 opponents have winning records. Wallin is the best Sokolowski has yet faced, but Sokolowski went the distance with David Price, and got knocked out in the tenth round by Zhan Kossobutskiy, so Sokolowski can fight. Wallin, entering the ring with a year of ring rust, took the win while taking no chances.
Result: Otto Wallin Win 8 Kamil Sokolowski, Heavyweights
Scoring: 79-74 for Wallin by referee Reece Carter
In the opening bout on the card, and the only other heavyweight bout of the night, unknown Shane Gill of Tipton, West Midlands, United Kingdom, scored his first pro win with a six round unanimous decision upset over favor undefeated 4-0 prospect 6’7″ Steve Robinson of Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom. Gill came in at 242 ½ pounds in condition to Robinson’s 252, which gave him the slight edge in maneuverability. Referee Reece Carter scored the bout 58-56 for Gill.
