In the latest World Boxing Council developments, four-division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will move up to cruiserweight in a bid to win a fifth world title, and will face champ Ilunga Makabu for the World Boxing Council World Cruiserweight title next.
Meanwhile, undefeated super middleweight David Benavidez, 25-0 with 22 knockouts, Phoenix, Arizona, a two-time WBC champion, will attempt to become the first super middleweight in World Boxing Council history to regain the 168 pounds title twice when he fights for the vacant Interim World Boxing Council Super Middleweight title next. What happens after the WBC 168 pounds bout takes place is contingent on whether Canelo returns to 168 to defend his undisputed super-middleweight titles after fighting Makabu.
With this maneuver, Benavidez, if he wins, will position himself next in line for Canelo, if Canelo returns back to super middleweight after the Makabu fight. Benavidez could get Caleb Plant, David Lemieux, Billy Jo Saunders, Daniel Jacobs, Jesse Hart, Anthony Dirrell, John Ryder, Carlos Gongora or Zach Parker, among available candidates as his opponent for the vacant WBC title. Who Benavidez fights next is still a mystery, but presumably, someone will step up to the plate for the chance to beat Benavidez and then possibly get a shot at Canelo.
