Errol Spence eye injury

Errol Spence Jr, Gets Eye Surgery

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Dallas, TX (August 12th, 2021)– WBC and IBF World Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. has had surgery in Dallas, Texas, to repair a torn left retina. Spence had been scheduled to engage WBA Super World champion Manny Pacquiao in a World Boxing council, World Boxing Association, and International Boxing Federation world title 147 pounds titular unification bout. WBA regular World Welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas, a Cuban Olympic Bronze medalist, is taking the place of Spence at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 21, 2021.

Pacquiao sent his get well regards to Spence after his eye surgery took place. “First and foremost, I ask everyone to join me in praying for a full and complete recovery for Errol Spence Jr. Thank God his physical examination discovered his eye condition before he suffered any further damage.  I have agreed to fight (a rival world champion) Yordenis Ugas, on August 21 (2021), for the WBA (unified World Boxing Association World) Welterweight super championship.  The proper way, and the only way to win a world title, is inside the ring.” Ugas was originally on the card as a co-feature in a preliminary bout to the main event, and got moved up when Spence bowed out.

According to Spence, “Unfortunately the (Nevada State Athletic Commission) doctors found a tear in my left eye, and said I needed to get surgery on it ASAP (immediately, and I would not be cleared to fight until the retinal issue was successfully corrected), and that there was no way I could fight with my eye in that (damaged) condition. I’d like to apologize to everyone (all fight fans).” Please note the image of the above photo on TMZ is apparently reversed.
