Newcastle, Australia (July 8th, 2021)– Despite 20 months of inactivity, and a 14 day COVID-19 quarantine, determined Cebuano southpaw Joe Noynay scored a shocking fifth round knockout of previously undefeated Australian super featherweight prospect Liam Wilson at Newcastle Entertainment Center in Newcastle, Australia.
The Filipine southpaw Noynay, 19-2-2 with eight knockouts, Bogo, Cebu, Philippines, retained the World Boxing Organisation Pan Pacific Super Featherweight title. The left hand he landed to finish off undefeated 9-0 prospect Wilson, Caboolture, Queensland, Australia, in the fifth round, led to the July 2021 Real Combat Media Upset of the Month.
A Noynay left cross to the temple dropped Wilson in the first round, and put Noynay ahead on the scorecards early in the bout. A strong Wilson left hook caused Noynay’s right ear to bleed at some point, but it did not affect the outcome of the bout. Noynay dropped Wilson twice in the fourth round, once with a straight left, and again with an uppercut.
A Noynay left to the jaw sent Wilson to the canvas for the fourth time late in the fifth round, and ended the bout for good. Noynay, ranked 12th in the world by the World Boxing Council, and 15th in the world by the International Boxing Federation, could become the first Bogo City Cebu world champion since the late southpaw Gabriel ‘Flash’ Elorde.
Flash Elorde, born in Bogo City Cebu, Philippines, who fought out of Metro Manila, fought professionally between 1951 and 1971 and compiled a record of 89-27-2 with 33 knockouts, and was the World Super Featherweight champion between 1960 and 1967. Elorde passed away in January 1985 at age 49, and was posthumously elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993. Filipino born Ben Villaflor, fighting out of Honolulu, Hawaii, held the World Boxing Association World Super Featherweight title between 1972 and 1976.
