Luis Arias Comes Off Canvas, Split Decisions Jarrett Hurd in Major Upset

Miami, FL (June 8th, 2021)– On June 6, 2021, in the main event of a seven bout card at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida, Luis Arias came off the canvas in round nine to score a ten round split decision upset win over former World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization World Super Welterweight champion Jarrett ‘Swift’ Hurd.
The major upset was neither predicted, foreseen or anticipated, as Arias, a former USBA Middleweight champion, bleeding from the forehead against Hurd after a clash of heads during the bout, had won only one of his previous three main event bouts in the past four years, since defeating 16-1 Arif Magomedov in the fifth round at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas in June 2017.
Arias, 19-2 with nine knockouts, Boca Raton, Florida, won this bout under new Cuban trainer Ismael Salas, because he never stopped punching and exchanging big shots with Hurd, who could not shake the heat and simply got outworked. Arias showed great heart, guts and determination, circling Hurd and scoring with fast combinations, consistent uppercuts and solid body work. Hurd countered and fought back, and the bout was close, but Arias did enough to win the close bout. Arias, who lost a 12 round decision to Daniel Jacobs in November 2017 at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, drew with Gabriel Rosado over 12 rounds in an IBO Latino Middleweight title bout at Kansas Star Arena in November 2018, then lost a 10 round decision to Luke Keeler in August 2019 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, after coming off the canvas in rounds one and nine, and getting penalized for hitting off the break in the eighth round.
Hurd, 24-2 with 16 knockouts, Accokeek, Maryland, who lost his world titles to Julian Williams in May 2019, won a 10 round decision over Francisco Santana in January 2020, just before the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Inactivity has affected many boxers, some of whom have found the road rockier in attempting to return to the ring than they would have liked. Arias has been heard, and Hurd has been. It’s nice to see a major upset, but a rematch between these two warriors could go either way.
