Ringer Round The Collar: Worst Results Weekend Before Christmas 2020
Editorial By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Even though the current coronavirus pandemic has enforced restrictions in many jurisdictions, boxing has not enforced strict requirements on dirty butting fighters, and for fighting ringers in some areas, who specialize in the dramatic loss, draw, and dramatic dive. Here are some of my favorites, which occurred the weekend before Christmas 2020.
Site: Escape Ballroom, Greenville, South Carolina, Saturday, December 19, 2020
Hats off to Augustine Mauras (7-8-3), Brittany Simms (1-1), Raekwon Williams (1-0), Demonte Cherry (1-7), Kevin Mario Cooper (1-22-1), Davon Foxx (0-3), Michael Davis (2-36), and Vaughn Williams (5-0 over winless fighters), none of whom made it out of the first round on this ‘exciting’ 12 bouts card. Roderick Gilkey (0-8-1) did a bit better, getting knocked out in the second round. Simms, with one pro bout, was in an NABF title bout.
Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, Connecticut, Saturday, December 19, 2020
Hats off to 26-0 Jaron Ennis and 28-2-1 Conor McGregor sparring partner Chris van Heerden, who lasted an incredible 42 seconds into the first round before a headbutt ended the main event of the five bouts card. Referee David Fields gave 18-0 Gary Antonio Russell a seventh-round technical decision win over Juan Carlos Payano, who was cut by an accidental headbutt in the fifth round. Butt should they or shouldn’t they? That was the question asked by television viewers. Van Heerden, who ruined Ennis’ 16 bout knockout streak, was a late replacement for Thomas Dulorme, who tested positive for COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus.
Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas, Saturday, December 19, 2020
12 bout veteran Isiah Jones, 9-4, lasted 157 seconds into the first round before getting stopped by undefeated Austin Williams. A more ‘experienced’ 7-6-1 Luis Javier Valdes did abit better, getting knocked out by Marc Castro in the third round of his pro debut. 16-16-2 Angel Hernandez, a winner of three of his last 13, got knocked out by unknown 19-2-1 Mexican Christian Alan Gomez Duran in the third round, all on the Canelo undercard.
Croatian Club, Carrara, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, Friday, December 18, 2020
9-1-2 Josh Fredericksen got decked in the first and fifth rounds en route to losing a six round decision to debuting Thomas Wilkins. Fredericksen should try another profession. On the same card, 0-1 Cody Poynter lasted 134 seconds against unbeaten Troy Harding.
Tynyshpayev Academy, Almaty, Kazakhstan, Friday December 18, 2020
Hats off to Evgenii Vazem, Nursultan Nuridenov and Shovkat Khalilov, first-round losers on this 22 bouts card. It pays to lose. Vazem, 9-13, a loser of seven of his last eight bouts, and newly counted out in 150 seconds, has a new fight scheduled next week.
IPI Compound, Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines, Friday, December 18, 2020
Hats off to Roland Jay Biedema, a 25 bouts veteran, who got knocked out in only 135 seconds of the first round, and 1-3 Matthew Fondales who got stopped in the first round.
Fly By Night Rehearsal Studios, Redditch, United Kingdom, Friday, December 18, 2020
Hats off to 8-18 Des ‘The Destroyer’ Newton, a loser of 10 consecutive bouts, and 17 of his last 18, who was knocked out at 0:36 of the third round by undefeated Stephen McKenna.
Galveston Island Convention Center, Galveston, Texas, Friday, December 18, 2020
0-3 Jarvis Lee got knocked out for the third consecutive time, this time by debuting Demonte Randle. 0-6 Lucas McDonald, who has never heard the final bell, did a bit better, when the referee awarded debuting Apostle Arias a technical decision in the fourth round after a cut caused by an ‘accidental’ headbutt.
Kilymandiaro Discoteca, Puerto Columbia, Columbia, Thursday, December 17, 2020
Hats off to the padded record of 16-4-1 Daniel Vegas Cota, who got knocked out at 38 seconds of the first round by undefeated visiting Venezuelan Gabriel Maestre. On the same card, 7-13 Luis Diaz Marmol, a winner of only one of his last eight bouts, pulled off a great escape against visiting 16-0-1 Kelvinyer Salazar, escaping with a No Contest in the third round after an ‘accidental’ headbutt.
Hotel Catania Malecon Center, Santo Domngo, Dominican Republic
In a main event bouts on a nine bouts card, the vacant World Boxing Association Fedelatin Lightweight title went out as Venezuela’s 13-7-1 Tony Gomez got stopped quickly in the first round by 13-1 former world title challenger Alfredo Santiago of Puerto Rico.
Sanman Gym, General Santos City, Cotobato del Sur, Philippines
Hats off to 37 bout veteran John Mark Apolinario, who got knocked out in 132 seconds by undefeated K.J. Cataraja in the main event. Three undercard bouts were abit better. Marjon Piencenaves got knocked down twice in the second round, then got knocked out in the second round. Jayson Francisco got knocked down twice in the second round, then got knocked out in the second round. Gerald Alvarez, a loser of nine consecutive bouts, got knocked down in round one and again in round two, then got knocked out in the second round. If you bought tickets for this card, you should demand your money back.
