WBC Champ Berchelt Stops Sosa in Four. Could Tank Davis or Tevin Farmer Be Next?

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Carson, CA (November 4th, 2019)– The battle of the World Boxing Council Super Featherweight title in history. Miguel ‘El Alacran’ Berchelt retained his World Boxing Council World Super Featherweight title with a fourth-round stoppage of Jason ‘El Canito’ Sosa, on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, California, in the main event.

Berchelt, 37-1 with 33 knockouts, Yucatan, Merida, Mexico, dropped Sosa, 23-4-4 with 16 knockouts, Camden, New Jersey, in rounds two and four, and cut Sosa over the left eye in round four from a legal punch, forcing Sosa’s corner to stop the fight at 2:56 of the fourth round.

Berchelt could now be a candidate to fight the WBA Super World Super Featherweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, 22-0 with 21 knockouts, Baltimore, Maryland OR Tevin Farmer, 30-4-1 with six knockouts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the current IBF World Super Featherweight champion.

Berchelt is Mexican. Like his compatriot Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez who beat Sergey Kovalev in Las Vegas the same day as Berchelt beat Sosa, Berchelt gives Mexico a good name. Alvarez’ latest win gives Berchelt and other Mexican world champions a big rise in boxing value, as their stock is higher due to Canelo this means Mexican fighters are more promotable in Canelo’s shadow.

Berchelt could also a stab at the lightweight division in 2020. Who knows? Berchelt is a fighter on the way up and on the move for sure. His latest wins will make other fighters think twice before fighting Berchelt. Based on his destruction of Sosa, Berchelt may have trouble finding opponents in the future. It is still hard to tell what 2020 will mean in the 130 pounds super featherweight division. Berchelt’s fights are always worth watching.
