WBC Lightweight Upset in Mexico! Marcos Villasana Jr. Shocks Jose Felix

Cancun, Mexico (April 16th, 2018)– The history of the ring has proven a rocky road for children and relatives of famous fighters. From Julio Cesar Chavez to Laila Ali to Buster Mathis Jr. to Salvador Sanchez Castro to Victor Dario Galindez to Marcel Cerdan Jr. to Willie Monroe Jr., the concept has been tried, often with mixed results.
For World Boxing Council Latino Featherweight champion Marcos Villasana Jr. of Acapulco, Mexico, the son of former World Boxing Council World Featherweight champion Marcos Villasana, the road to becoming a top 20 world ranked lightweight with a record of 31-6 with 13 knockouts has been a hard one. His last seven bouts have been wins, including TKO wins in four different rounds, a six round win, a 12 round win, and a disqualification win in the tenth round. Hard work prevails. Still, he was an underdog to win the vacant World Boxing Council Fecarbox title against 36-2 Jose Felix Jr. of Los Mochis, Mexico, whose record includes 28 knockouts, at Oasis Arena in Cancun, Mexico, on Saturday, April 14, 2018.
This bout turned out to be a sensational yet another ‘you never know’ result. Villasana decked Felix in the fourth round, and stopped him in the ninth round. Using power overhand right hands, Villasana kept to a strict game plan and controlled the ring, working Felix into the ropes, where he was not fast enough to counter or escape the ring being cut off.
When open scoring was announced after the eighth round, Villasana wisely decided he did not want to leave the bout to the cards, and went ‘for it’ with a wild, furious and vicious nonstop attack in the ninth round which unexpectedly finished dangerous world class ‘Josesito’ Felix helpless in a corner, who seemingly could have turned the bout at any time but was unable to do so, and was magically totally outpsyched. Referee Frank Gentile stopped the bout with Felix helpless. How about that for an upset at 135 pounds. You never know.
Result: Marcos Villasana Jr. TKO 9 Jose Felix Jr., Lightweights
Villasana, son of Marcos Villasana, Wins The Vacant WBC Fecarbox Lightweight Title
Referee: Frank Gentile
Felix down in fourth round. Villasana finished Felix in a corner in the ninth round.
