Inglewood, Ca (February 24, 2018)— Thailand’s Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (45-4-1, 40 KOs) remains the WBC Super flyweight world champion, after winning a very close yet controversial majority decision over Juan Francisco Estrada (36-3, 25 KOs) in a tense, and all-out war on HBO Boxing in front of 7,827 fans at The Forum in Inglewood, CA, which exceeds the 7,418 that packed the StubHub Center in Carson, Ca for the first SuperFly.
The main event was very exciting and full of action as predicted. In the beginning, both fighters were displaying good boxing skills, but Estrada was the better technician. His countering skills were on point, but the shots didn’t seem to slow the champ down as he would land the bigger shots. Rungvisai’s aggressiveness was key in this fight, which kept Estrada on the back foot to reduce the possibility of taking power shots from the hard-hitting champ.
In the middle rounds, Rungvisai had a close lead. He landed working great counters, effectively attacking the body, and landing more punches as the rounds progressed, finding the open spots in Estrada’s defense.
El Gallo”marched back in the later rounds and connected Sor Rungvisai on multiple occasions with great combos and head-snapping jabs. His defense was a lot better from the earlier rounds. Estrada’s head movement ability was being overlooked by some members of the media. Estrada avoided great shots and would counter Rungvisai very effectively.
When the fight came to the last round, the crowd stood up as the fight became more intense. Estrada switched gears and unleashed everything he had to get the knockout. He outlanded the champ with hard shots to the head and body and soon it was an all-out brawl.
After the fight came to an end, the ring announcer Michael Buffer announced a majority win in favor of the champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and the champ retains his WBC super flyweight world title.
The judges scored the bout 114-114, 117-111, and 115-113
“He hits very hard and I like his style, but I know I won the fight. The difference between now and other points in my career is now I have the support of the people of Thailand.” Said Rungvisai.
“I will fight anybody at 115 pounds, including giving Estrada a rematch if that’s what he wants,” Sor Rungvisai said. “I’m very thankful to the American boxing fans for supporting me and the Thailand fans. I look forward to fighting in Los Angeles again.”
Estrada seemed very disappointed with the outcome.
“I felt I won the fight. I boxed him all night long and then I attacked him the last three rounds,” Estrada said. “I landed great shots at the end. I don’t know what the judges saw. I thought I won clearly.”
“That 12th round was nonstop action,” Loeffler said. “They were dead tired but throwing punches and landing punches. It could be the round of the year.”
Co-main event
Puertorican fighter McWilliams Arroyo improves his record to 17-3, 14 KOs after defeating Mexican fighter Carlos Cuadras 36-3-1, 27 KOs in a 10-round matchup, via majority- decision. The judges scored the bout 95-95, 98-92, and 97-93. This victory puts Arroyo on a possible third title shot in the super flyweight division.
“People underestimated me because I hadn’t fought in almost two years,” said Arroyo. “But I was always in the gym and always prepared to fight. When the opportunity came to fight Carlos Cuadras, I knew I was ready and I knew I would win. I want to fight the winner of the main event and I will beat them also and show I am the best fighter in the division.”
“For some reason I felt tight all night long, very stiff,” Cuadras said. “I couldn’t let go with punches like I wanted to.”
Donnie Nietes vs Juan Carlos Reveco
The incredible Donnie Nietes (41-1-4 23 KOs) continues to reign in the flyweight division. The Filipino fighter defended his title against Argentinian fighter Juan Carlos Reveco (39-4, 19 KOs) and successfully retains his IBF flyweight world title after a sensational TKO victory.
The champ Nietes had full control of the fight, but the lack of action had the crowd turning on the fighters and boos were chanted all across the arena. That quickly changed when in the sixth-round Nietes caught him with a short right hand that badly wobbled Reveco, who looked completely out of it and drifted to his corner.
The one-minute rest period was not enough for Reveco to recover. Nietes attacked him at the start of the seventh round and connected Reveco with nasty shots to the body. Reveco’s córner felt they had seen enough and threw in the towel with 53 seconds into the seventh round.
