UFC 170: Olympian vs. Olympian: What does a victory for Sara McMann over Ronda Rousey really means for women’s MMA?

By Syl Peterkin, RCM Correspondent

Las Vegas, Nevada (February 22, 2013)– Sara McMann is an undefeated MMA women’s fighter who is challenging Ronda Rousey for the UFC women’s bantamweight belt (135lbs belt).  She at the age of 33 is undefeated (7-0) with one knockout victory and 3 submission wins. She is also a 2004 Olympic silver medalist in wrestling.   She is facing Ronda Rousey, the undefeated women’s UFC bantamweight champion.  Ronda Rousey is 8-0 with 8 submission victories as well a bronze medalist in Judo for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Ronda Rousey, 27, is also a media darling.  Whether Ronda plays the hero or the heel; fans seem to simply talk about her.  She has embraced her status as a media darling who is intelligent, opinionated and pretty.  In fact Ronda has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, various commercials, two upcoming movies, and is ranked 29th on the Maxim Hot 100.

Sara McMann on the other hand seems to almost shun the media.  She suffered greatly with the death of her brother and past boyfriend.  She would later use this as a motivation to do well in MMA.  Her lack of ability to garner media attention from the casual fan could be an upcoming sign.

The fact that Ronda Rousey almost singlehandedly helped to establish the women’s division in the UFC is a testament to her media savvy.   Now although Ronda Rousey is a 4-1 favorite, she is not a lock to win. A loss from Ronda could be significant enough to shake interest in this young division of the UFC.  This is especially true of someone who beats her and isn’t able to effectively garner further media attention.  A win for Ronda would continue to help grow women’s MMA.  A win for Sara McMann could stagnant the growth of women’s MMA until another media savvy female were to come up.
