Floyd Maidana

Why Maidana Will Take The Fight To Floyd

By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent

Welterweight Marcos Rene ‘El Chino’ Maidana of Buenos Aires, Argentina, 35-3 with 31 knockouts, the current World Boxing Association World Welterweight champion, took the fight to Adrien Broner, and had huge success.

Now 45-0 with 26 knockouts, Floyd Mayweather Jr. of Las Vegas, Nevada, the current World Boxing Council Welterweight and Light Middleweight champion, and World Boxing Association Super World Welterweight champion, has a similar fighting style to Adrien Broner. Conversely, Adrien Broner has a similar fighting style to Floyd Mayweather Jr.Why should Floyd Mayweather Jr. be any different?

One reason might be Broner has emulated and imitated Floyd. However Floyd is the ‘real Floyd’, the real McCoy, and his presence and true ability might be a very different thing for Maidana to try to handle in similar fashion as he did Broner, a Floyd imposter. It can be said Broner is no Floyd.

Maidana won because he got inside on Broner. Against Maidana, Floyd will try to stay on the outside and outbox Maidana. In doing so, if his game plan against Maidana is carried out successfully, Floyd will try to show Adrien Broner what he should have done to beat Maidana. Floyd will have to throw punches from the outside, and throw his punches in bunches, giving him the rounds on the scorecards, and not letting Maidana get off.

Against Floyd, Maidana is going to try to get inside, hit Floyd, and get out as efficiently and speedily as possible. Quickness for Maidana, and superior punch output, are keys to success for Maidana. For sure, Maidana is going to take the fight to the inside regardless. It all boils down to whether or not Floyd is able to catch Maidana coming in, because if Floyd doesn’t, Maidana’s definitely going to put some heat and pressure on Floyd.

In the past nine years, Floyd has only knocked out one opponent, when you exclude the Victor Ortiz farce with the referee forgetting to send both fighters to a neutral corner during a timeout and time in after a foul. At 37 years of age, Floyd’s reflexes, speed and power may soon become questionable, which will have a direct impact on the chances of each opponent he now faces.

Maidana will use the same game plan against Floyd which he used against Adrien Broner, because of Broner’s and Floyd’s fighting style similarities. Broenr is going to adapt his game plan to adjust to anything Floyd throws at him. If Floyd cannot stop Maidana from coming in, Maidana’s game plan stays the same as he utilized against Broner. If Floyd does not catch Maidana coming in, then Floyd is going to have to readjust or rethink his game plan.

Maidana is willing to take chances to get inside on Floyd. Maidana is a risk taker. However, Maidana is going to have to take chances to get inside. There isn’t any other way for Maidana to fight Floyd and win. With the right plan of attack executed to perfection, ideally speaking, Maidana would outpoint Floyd over 12 rounds. Even with a point deduction for a foul due to some play acting by Broner, Maidana still won handily on all three scorecards.  Floyd had no such similar luck his last time around, as one judge scored his bout against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez as a 12 round draw.

With hard work, Maidana can outwork Floyd by punch count volume. The more punches thrown the better, so as not to give a chance to think. Maidana has to overwhelm Floyd for all 12 rounds, or Maidana doesn’t stand a chance.

Floyd could surprise Maidana if he pulls another Victor Ortiz move. Maidana is a far different fighter for Floyd to face than Victor Ortiz. Maidana is a dangerous fight for Floyd. The truth be told, Floyd did not have to take a fight with Maidana. Maidana is a much more dangerous fighter than Manny Pacquiao., Maidana is going in against Floyd with confidence. Floyd’s arrogance makes Maidana more dangerous because Floyd will underestimate Maidana like Adrien Broner did. If Floyd goes in against Maidana in a state of arrogance, Floyd’s going to lose. Floyd cannot be too cautious either. Because he is a going to have to stop Maidana from getting off.

Prediction: Floyd Mayweather Jr. Win 12 Marcos Rene Maidana if Floyd prevents Maidana from getting inside, or Maidana Win 12 Floyd if Maidana does get inside and Floyd cannot contain him.

Is Maidana afraid of Floyd? No, but anybody who gets in the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr. without a little hesitation is nuts.

The first round is going to tell you how the fight is going to end up. If Mayweather catches Maidana coming in, it may be a long or possibly short night.  Plain and simple, Maidana has to take the fight to Floyd. If Floyd cannot catch Maidana coming in, it will be a long night for Floyd. Maidana is desperately hungry, and knows no fear. Floyd has to outbox Maidana from the outside, like Amir Khan did, exposing Maidana’s weaknesses by fighting the fight on the outside, according to the game plan in motion.
