Maidana Exposes Broner, Wins WBA Welterweight Title and Maybe A Shot at Floyd
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
Houston, TX (December 15th, 2013)– Marcos Rene Maidana AKA ‘El Chino’ has traveled from his native Buenos Aires, Argentina to the United States several times. In his last three trips, Maidana has seen his hand raised three times: over Jesus Soto Karass; over Joselito Lopez; and now, over Adrien Broner, on Saturday evening, December 14, 2013, in the main event of the Showtime sports ‘Dangerzone’ boxing card at The Alamodome in Houston, Texas.
Maidana, now 35-3, 31 knockouts, ignored Broner’s annoying flash and flashy showboating, and went to work by outworking Broner. Straight jabs, inside uppercuts, and hooks over the top came from Maidana at a furious pace. Maidana threw 964 punches, more than twice the 400 punches Broner threw. Maidana landed 269 punches, 100 punches punches more than Broner. Maidana quickly wore Broner down with the furious pace he set, slowing down Broner’s hand speed and neutralizing his power.’’ A left hook sent an off balance Broner to the canvas in the second. Maidana used a left hook-body shot-left hook combination to send Broner to the canvas again in the eighth round. Broner held on for dear life, forcing Maidana to butt upwards to get out of the bear hug. Broner then did a dramatic dive to the floor clutching his chin, somehow convincing the referee to take a point from Maidana, changing the 10-8 into a 9-8 round for Maidana.
Maidana won several rounds which appeared to be 10-8 in his favor. Broner perhaps won the fourth round, and won the fifth, six and seventh and twelfth rounds. He needed a knockout to win, but it never happened. Even in the rounds he won, Broner, now 27-1, 22 knockouts, Cincinnati, Ohio, was being pressured all night from punches coming from everywhere by Maidana, and Broner’s ‘Problem’ was he just couldn’t shake him anywhere in the ring. Maidana just kept coming, and took the bout inside, often forcing Broner into the ropes.
Broner had no change in game plan, and no answer for Maidana, whose entire game was to take the fight to Broner like Paulie Malignaggi and Daniel Ponce De Leon had done so well, but add power shots to the mix. Maidana landed 231 power shots on Broner, who took the punches when they landed and took away his steam. In the process of trouncing Broner, Marcos Rene Maidana might have won himself a multimillion dollar shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2014. Maidana was hungry and relentless. Broner looked tired. As Broner and his entourage exited the ring, angry disgusted fans threw drinks at them. It might have been the fight of the year, but Broner appeared overhyped, and unable to do much against a real fighter at 147 pounds. Broner almost got knocked out twice as well, what a horrible way not to impress your fans on Showtime Sports, who broadcast the card.
Result: Marcos Rene Maidana Win Unanimous Decision 12 Adrien Broner, Welterweights
Scoring; 117-109, 115-109, 115-110 for Maidana. Referee: Laurence Cole
In the preliminary bout to the main event, 21-0 Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman of Clearwater, Florida, recorded his nineteenth knockout and won the interim WBA World Welterweight title with a ninth round stoppage of rough tough Jesus Soto Karass. Long a gatekeeper of the divison, Soto Karass kept coming forward trying to counter, despite taking Thurman’s best shots, and would not go. It looked like you could hit oto Karass over thehead with thekitchen sink and he still would keep coming forward. Finally, heavy power shots from the side to side moving Thurman knocked out Soto Karass on his feet, with referee Jon Schorle holding Soto Karass as he fell, preventing his head from hitting the canvas.
