Miracle at Roosevelt Hospital: Abdusalamov’s Medical Condition Improving
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
New York, NY (November 15th, 2013)– Originally doctors believed there was no hope, Magomed Abdusalamov, 32, was certain to die after surgery to remove a blot clot on his brain left him in a medically induced coma after suffering a heart attack during surgery. Mago, who also incurred a broken nose, cheek bone and broken left hand, had part of his skull removed as well after losing his ten round heavyweight bout to Mike Perez earlier this month at Madison Square Garden.
Doctors now say they will try to wake him out of his medically induced coma in the next 48 to 72 hours at Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan. The extent of the damage will not be known until that point. Mago was in top condition for the Perez bout after knocking out his first 18 professional opponents. However, the furthest he had gone in a bout before Perez was in a fifth round stoppage of Puerto Rico’s Victor Bisbal earlier this year in Atlantic City. Mago’s wife Bakanay is in the process of relocating from Florida to be closer to her husband.
Mago is not the only front page athlete getting attention after being forced to retire from injuries. Three time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti, who fractured his spine, broke his right ankle and suffered a concussion in a race car crash in Houston this past October, has been told by doctors he can no longer race again
