Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson is confirmed for UFC 165
Winnipeg, MB (June 13th, 2013)– The long talked about title fight between UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson will be the main event for UFC 165 in Toronto.
UFC President Dana White announced if officially during the UFC 161 workouts in Winnipeg, MB. UFC 165 is scheduled for September 21 at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.
Gustafsson is riding a six-fight win streak since his only career loss, which came to current teammate Phil Davis in 2010. He earned the #1 contender’s status with decision victories over Thiago Silva and former champion Shogun Rua. Gustafsson was supposed to fight Gegard Mousasi in April’s UFC on FUEL TV 9 event but wasn’t medically cleared due to facial a cut.
Jones has successfully defended the belt against top fighters such as Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort before dismantling middleweight turned light heavyweight Chael Sonnen in April. Jones has now won nine straight fights with eight stoppages. Only the Rashad Evans bout went to the judges.
