Gennady Golovkin vs. Mathew Macklin Preview
By Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent, Tom Mauriello
Mashantucket, CT (June 29th, 2013)–This Saturday night Matthew “Mack the Knife” Macklin (29(20 Ko’s)-4) welcomes Gennaday “GGG” Golovkin (26(23 Ko’s)-0) to the upper echelon of the Middleweight division at the MGM Grand Theater at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut live on HBO. Both fighters best defense, is their offense, which will give fans plenty to cheer for. The question of this fight, is how long can Mack The Knife withstand the power of GGG.
Matthew Macklin is the stiffest competition that Golovkin has faced to date. Macklin brings a different style to the table that Golovkin has yet to see. Macklin is aggressive, hits hard and has taken the best of the division into the late rounds of title fights. He is relentless in his attack and never afraid to exchange. Macklin was able to put division ace Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez on the mat with this style, before his corner stopped the action in the 11th round of their fight in March of 2012. Macklin fights with heart and will look to avenge his two World Title losses and de rail the GGG hype train. Considering that he does not posses the technical tools to out box Golovkin, Macklin must turn this fight into a war, and establish himself early against the Kazakhstan native. Macklin’s best bet here is to attempt to drag this fight out into the later rounds where Golovkin has not been in recent years. It is here, where Macklin has his best bet in winning this fight. The Irishmen must turn this fight ugly and test GGG’s will and endurance.
There are many words that come to mind when describing Gennaday Golovkin. Freak, savage, stud, animal, and bruiser. I on the other hand, will describe him as a world-class boxer, who has dynamite in both hands. Golovkin has Mike Tyson style power, as it generates from such short, accurate punches. He has the highest knockout ratio of any current champion at the moment, and its does not look like it will fall anytime soon. This man does not force the knockout, it just comes. You can see the grimace on the face of opponents as GGG lands his punches. They are short, compact and pack serious power. He has been cutting down fighters with ease holding a phenomenal work rate with this being his third fight of the year. In my opinion, this fight will be a tougher test for Golovkin. He is fighting an aggressive fighter, who is not afraid to trade. He must stay in the pocket, and not allow himself to take to many punches. He must move and keep boxing, once he touches Macklin enough, he will eventually fall like everyone else.
I see this fight being very entertaining. Macklin will look to bring the fight to GGG, but will eventually succumb to the power of Golovkin. If Macklin tries to box with GGG, he will be walked down, and punished. If Macklin turns this fight into a war, it will only be a matter of time before the right shot comes through and sends Macklin down the ladder of the Middleweight elite. Golovkin will turn Macklin into the 24th “Good Boy” on his record, and keep his 87% KO win ratio with superior boxing skills, and vicious power.
On the under card of this triple header you have South African Thomas Oosthuizen (21(13)-0) takes on Brandon Gonzales (17(10)-0) where someone will suffer there first defeat.
