Sergio Latin Snake Mora Back in Middleweight Mix, Easily Outpoints Proksa

Jacksonville, Florida (June 29th, 2013)– Middleweight Sergio ‘The Latin Snake’ Mora used a consistent jab and the ability to magically slip many punches to outpoint Grzegorz Proksa over ten rounds in the Friday Night Fights ESPN2 main event. Two judges had the bout for Mora a poorly scored 96-94, while the third judge got in right at 98-92. Teddy Atlas had the bout 97-93 for Mora.

Mora, 33, now 24-3-2, seven knockouts, Los Angeles, California, appeared to win the last five rounds fairly easily, walking Proksa down and staying busy, while landing some big shots along the way. Proksa backed up and just could not get his offense going, and backed up whenever Mora wanted to mix it in close.

The first five rounds were closer, perhaps 3 rounds to 2 for either fighter, which is where Proksa won a few close rounds. Proksa, 28, 29-2 with 21 knockouts, a Polish southpaw fighting out of Surrey, England, appears not to have fully recovered from getting knocked out by WBA and IBO World Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in the fifth round last September. Proksa struggled six rounds to decision Norbert Szekeres in February 2013, a 25 loss fighter with a losing record.

Proksa kept his hands dangerously low all night, giving Mora free chances to find a place for overhand lefts and rights and crisp counterpunching. Mora was not even scratched, as Proksa just was not throwing. The bearded Mora, inactive since fighting Brian Mora in August 2012, set a world championship tempo, and looked closer to the boxer who defeated the late Vernon Forrest to win the World Boxing Council Light Middleweight title in June 2008.

Proksa swung for the stars at the end of the bout, missed, and headed face first to the canvas through the ropes as the bout ended as Proksa danced to the final bell. Scoring appeared neutral and fair, giving Proksa two more rounds than he deserved on two of the three scorecards. While there were many clinches, the bout itself appeared clean at the Veteran’s Center in Jacksonville, Florida.

In the preliminary bout to the main event,  20-0 Brazilian light middleweight prospect Patrick Teixeira won a ten round decision over game Marcus Willis, who did not go down and won perhaps only one round. Willis took a beating in the seventh round but somehow survived. Teixeira punched himself out a bit but still had enough to win the last three rounds. Willis held a great deal, as both fighters went ten for the first time in their careers.
