Devon Alexander vs. Randall Bailey Recap

By: Mike Roach

Devon Alexander is now the IBF  Welterweight title holder after beating Randall Bailey by unanimous decision in a 12 round shut out. Alexander showed his speed and agility against the fading Bailey from  start to finish. Alexander worked the jab, side-to-side, slip and dip, and turned Bailey for almost every round. Alexander dictated the pace, and showed that (at 147) Bailey had no answer for the new champion’s lateral movement and (grunts) feints. Bailey waited all night for that powerful right, but could not find a good home for it. He just looked like he wasn’t in the fight. Bailey couldn’t pull the trigger and was stiff. He landed a couple of right hands, but Alexander took them and returned fire with quick jabs. The fifth round was the only round Bailey could have had taken from Devon.

The fight was a sleeper with the Brooklyn crowd booing Alexander at the acceptance of his victory. Possibly Bailey was still injured or being 38 had something to do with his showing. What’s next for Alexander? How about a rematch with Timothy Bradley? Maybe Paulie Malignaggi. The two have been throwing verbal jabs at each other for quite some time. A bout with Brandon Rios is a stretch but it could happen even though the two boxers know each other from the amateurs. Well with a new title  in a different weight class coming back home to St. Louis, the future is bright for Devon Alexander. And the St. Louis Cardinals is going to the World Series So said the champ. Congratulations on the Victory!!!
