Brooklyn,NY–Randall Bailey ( 43-7-37 K.Os) defends the IBF Welterweight title against Devon Alexander (23-1-13 K.Os) tonight on Showtime. The fight was delayed on September 8th due to Bailey having an injury. This fight will be as much as a challenge for Bailey, as much as it will be for Alexander. Both fighters have come off impressive victories in their last bouts. Bailey knocked out undefeated Mike Jones with a vicious right uppercut in the 11th round on June 9th. Alexander out boxed Marcos Maidana in a ten round match in February.
There has been much trash talk back and fourth between the two camps with Alexander’s trainer, Kevin Cunningham being the most vocal. They have even went at it on Bailey’s face book page With Alexander stating, “How are you going to hit what is not there?” This match is interesting because Alexander is slick boxer with great lateral movement, great counter punching, speed, and a decent jab. Bailey is dangerous for his K.O. power in that right hand. One mistake can change the tone of this fight if Bailey is lucky enough to get one off on Alexander. This will be a match where age could be a factor for Bailey since he is 38, and Alexander is 25 and hungry for a title since loosing to Timothy Bradley early in 2011 by technical decision. This is Alexander’s second bout at welterweight since moving up from light welterweight in February.
Bailey is naturally the bigger fighter and has more power than Alexander. However, speed and footwork could be a major challenge for Bailey since he was losing his last fight on the scorecards until catching Mike Jones in the late rounds. Alexander will be very difficult to hit also because he is a southpaw and most boxers fromSt. Louisare pretty slick at catching their opponents off guard and making them make mistakes. I do not see Bailey being knocked out, but I do see him taking a loss by decision.
Showtime has put together an awesome card for tonight even though Eric Morales was caught with a banned substance in testing. He takes on Danny Garcia in a rematch. We also have Paulie Malignaggi vs. Pablo Cesar Cano, Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam vs. Peter Quillin on Showtime, in Brooklyn,NY.
