Well, fight fans if you missed last nights bout between Lucas Matthysse and Olusegun Ajose, you missed the 4th of July in September. There were fire works from the start with Matthysse stalking Ajose from the opening round. Early on Matthysse showed that this bout would not end with the judges decision. Bomb after bomb was thrown with gruesome intent as Ajose moved and danced to avoid the knock out power of the Argentinian.
Olusegun Ajose, 30-0, 14 K.O.s showed why he was undefeated in taking some of the hardest punches of the night,(possibly his career) and still returning fire with the Terminator, Lucas Matthysse, 31-2, 29 K.O.s. Ajose stood firm with slickness, speed, heart and determination as the match went on. There were a few times he tripped over Matthysse’s foot but he stayed in the fight until the tenth round when he was caught with a straight right. The ref stopped the bout even though Ajose (post fight) stated he could have continued. But with only 3 bouts in 3 years maybe ring rust was the factor in Ajose’s performance.
Matthysse is now the Interim WBC Super Lightweight Champion. This is his first belt. Matthysse landed 290 of 689 punches. Ajose landed 153 of 561 punches. Lucas is perhaps the biggest puncher in the 140 pound division. There are many great boxers out there for him challenge. Well done as Matthysse moves on to 30 K.O.s out of 32 victories. Argentina is proud. Congratulations to the new champion, Lucas Martin Matthysse.
