Clash that “Fitz” the bill
By: Stephen Sharpe
Two of the city’s most popular pugilists are set to collide in what will be one of the capitals most highly anticipated domestic dustups for many years.
Former WBF Intercontinental and EBA middleweight strap holder Anthony “the Pride” Fitzgerald will lock horns with former amateur foe and fellow Dubliner Brendan “Firecracker” Fitzpatrick at the National Basketball arena on the 3rd of November.
The clash of the two Northside rivals will provide one half of a double headliner on the co-promoted Emerald Promotions and KO Promotions “Rumble in Dublin” event that will also see the Dublin return of Limericks former European Champion and World title challenger Limerick “Big Bang” Willie Casey.
Following a shock defeat to Belfast’s Ciaran Healy last year on the undercard of Patrick Hylands WBF title win against Philippe Frenois at the National Stadium, Fitzpatrick who trains in Belfast under the watchful eye of John Breen has fired back with two impressive wins within the last month,
Having considered walking away from boxing following the defeat to Healy, Fitzpatrick finally put the disappointment behind him on the 17th of August to make a winning return in Castlebar on the undercard of Henry Coyle’s WBF title defence with an impressive third round stoppage of former Irish light heavyweight champion John Waldron.
Just three weeks later Brendan travelled to Belfast to fight on the undercard of the newly formed Peace Promotions inaugural presentation where he again delivered a convincing performance on route to a shutout points win over the tough and experienced Portsmouth southpaw Paul Morby.
Further success for the resurgent “Finglas Firecracker” over a somewhat inactive Fitzgerald in this Dublin derby will leave the Fitzpatrick firmly knocking on the door of an Irish title.
With just two fights in over eighteen months, including a contentious Prizefighter defeat to Eamonn O’Kane in Belfast, Anthony “the Pride” Fitzgerald will be looking to reignite his carrier, but must first prevail in a contest that promises to lift the roof of the South Dublin venue.
Further mouth-watering additions to the “Rumble in Dublin” fight night will be revealed over the coming weeks in what promises to be an action packed night of professional boxing.
Both Emerald Promotions and KO Promotions have ensured ticket prices are kept at recessionary prices for recessionary times and are confident Irish boxing fans will turn out in force to support the event.
Tickets for the “Rumble in Dublin” fight night priced at €25 & €35 will go on sale from September 25th via www.greenjab.ie & www.emeraldboxingpromotions.com
