Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson Retires
By: Anthony L. Gonzalez
On last night’s program of ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights, Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KOs) retired after he lost to Polish light heavyweight, Andrzej Fonfara (22-2, 12 KOs) from Chicago’s UIC Pavillion. Johnson lost by unanimous decision by a score of 99-91, 97-93 and 97-93.
Here is what Glen Johnson told ESPNS’s Joe Tessitore,
“I feel like the end of the road is here. Father Time is undefeated, I really see no reason to move forward. If I can’t win a fight like this, I won’t achieve my ultimate goal, which is being a world champion. So if I can’t be a world champion then what’s the use?”
Johnson retires at age 43 and is from Clarendon, Jamaica. His career highlights include victories over Roy Jones Jr., Antonio Tarver, Montell Griffin, Clinton Woods and most recently he upset Allan Green in 2010 via TKO. Johnson received the name “Road Warrior”, because he would travel to fight anyone in the world and give all of his competitors a very tough fight. He also had a controversial loss to Chad Dawson in 2008.
Glen’s record is very deceiving and many of his 17 losses could have gone either way. Johnson competed at middleweight, supermiddleweight and light heavyweight during his illustrious 19 year pro career. He has held the IBF light heavyweight title, the Ring Title and he was named the 2004 Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writer’s Association of America.
Real Combat Media wishes Glen Johnson the best in all of his future endeavors after his great boxing career. Glen will be remembered as a class act who did not back down from any fighter.
