THE MOMENTS: JONES VS. GLAZEWSKI
By: Joston R. Theney
Some moments in time call for a measure of introspection, and others an equal measure of retrospection. This Saturday’s light heavyweight contest between former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (55-8, 40 KOs) and the undefeated, yet truly untested WBC Baltic Silver Light Heavyweight Champion Pawel Glazewski of Poland, asks for both.
Aging athletes in every sport eventually find themselves teetering between what can be debilitating introspection and inspirational retrospection, asking themselves: what do they have left, and what do they have left to prove. As a pound-for-pound king destined for the Hall of Fame, Jones dazzled observers of the sport and fighters alike with his blistering hand-speed, cat-like reflexes and brazen bravado. Moving from middleweight to heavyweight, and conquering division champions with ease along the way, Jones proved himself worthy of the pound-for-pound title bestowed upon him. However, fans haven’t seen a prime “Super” Roy Jones Jr since 2000. And now after of a string of defeats – many by knockout – and boasting a record of 1-3 in his last four outings, one must believe that the time has come for a moment of introspection and retrospection for Jones. Regarding his career, his health and his legacy.
This Saturday night, Jones will find the perfect opponent standing across the ring to help him make sense of this moment. When Jones’ scheduled opponent, hard-punching Dawid Kostecki was arrested this past week, light heavyweight WBC Baltic Silver champion Pawel Glazewski stepped up to do battle and save the event. A durable, come-forward orthodox puncher who works the body and head with equal intensity, the WBC #9 ranked Glazewski finds himself in a coveted position to catapult his career with a win over a future Hall of Famer. Boasting a record of 17-0, 4KOs, Glazewski’s workmanlike victories to claim four light heavyweight championships in only three years should give Jones a little more to think about in this moment.
What does Roy Jones Jr. have left? What is it that he feels he has left to prove? And will the current WBC Baltic Silver Light Heavyweight Champion Pawel Glazewski allow him to answer those questions? For those of us who believe every once-great fighter has one great fight left in them, we hope to find out on Saturday night from the Atlas Arena in Lodz,Poland at 4:45pmUK/ 5:45 CET /11:45am EST.

I have always been a Roy Jones Jr fan. He is one of the all time greats, but that time has long passed. He’s been a shadow of his former self ever since he dropped back to Lt Hvy after his win over John Ruiz. I’m not sure whether it’s Jones’ ego, his finances, or both that won’t let him quit, but he is slowly becoming the next Evander Holyfield… a great who just doesn’t know when to quit. Jones will probably lose this fight, but even if he wins, he needs to hang up the gloves and move on to a role that doesn’t involve showcasing a faded former champion.
