A PUGILIST’S PRECIPICE: LARA VS. VANES
By: Joston “El Rey” Theney
As the old adage goes, “Plunge boldly into the thick of life and seize it where you can. And it will always be interesting.” So will be the case this Saturday night when two title-hungry contenders battle it out in a championship eliminator for 154-pound supremacy. Former gold medalist and WBC #1 ranked Super-Welterweight Contender Erislandy Lara (17-1-1, 11KOs) laces up his ten ounce gloves against the WBC #2 ranked, undefeated knock-out artist Vanes Martirosyan (32-0, 20KOs), for a guaranteed title-shot against WBC Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Should he be able to stop Martirosyan’s straight right hand and control the pace of the fight, the former gold medalist southpaw Erislandy “El Oro del Guantanamo” Lara makes this highly-contested title eliminator a 50/50 fight. Having seized his first opportunity last July to become a world champion against Paul “The Punisher” Williams, only to have it taken away on tainted scorecards, Lara seeks definitive adjudication as to his place in the 154-pound division. A crafty, left-handed pugilist with enough guile and power to knockout Ronald Hearns in one round and ten others in his seventeen-fight career, “El Oro del Guantanamo” is Guantanamo Gold with his eyes locked on WBC Gold.
Standing in “El Oro del Guantanamo’s” way is Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan. “The Nightmare” punched his way into world title contention, dispatching of Bladimir Hernandez and unseating former champion Saul Roman to take the WBC Silver Light Middleweight title. The problem that Erislandy Lara will find when he steps through the ropes to do battle with this title-hungry pugilist is that Martirosyan is unlike anyone Lara has ever faced. Vanes has faster hands and heavier punches than Lara’s previous opponents. And with better footwork and overall boxing ability than Molina, Hernandez and Paul Williams, it isn’t too far-fetched to see Vanes become Lara’s “Nightmare” and tarnish Guantanamo Gold’s dreams of ascending to 154-pound supremacy.
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe once exclaimed, “Plunge boldly into the thick of life and seize it where you can! And it will always be interesting.” Well, this Saturday night, live from the Lafite Ballroom at the Wynn inLas Vegas,NVat 10pm ET/PT, the term “interesting” gets redefined. Fireworks will fly during this potential Fight of the Year candidate when Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan meets Erislandy “El Oro del Guantanamo” Lara in the squared circle. Because these two pugilists stand at the precipice of supremacy and only one can take the plunge. Only one will seize the opportunity. Join us for a wonderful night of boxing and watch the ascension of the 154-pound contender for supremacy.
