WALK THE TALK – KHAN VS. GARCIA

By: Joston “El Rey” Theney

Pre-fight hype from journalists and commentators of the sweet science has long been recognized as part of the process for promoting upcoming attractions. The flashing lights, the incredible fight teasers and extravagant press conferences only serve to further elucidate the luster and the significance of the battles for supremacy which are to take place. But something else has become a part of that pre-fight build-up. Something that serves to intensify the tension between the competitors and explain the necessity for this battle to occur this moment and why we need to watch. That added something is heavy, unadulterated trash-talking. Team Ali introduced it to the sport. Team Mayweather made it mainstream on 24/7. But Team Garcia has made it personal in the media.

When the WBC Light Welterweight Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (23-0, 14KOs) steps into the squared circle at the Mandalay Events Center in Las Vegas on Saturday evening, he will find himself staring across the ring at an incensed former light welterweight champion Amir “King” Khan (28-2, 18KOs). Khan has been the target of Team Garcia’s verbal attacks ranging from the mockery of his fighting style, his fragile chin and his questionable heart. But the stinging attack that left the light welterweight division’s superstar incensed was the profanity-laced attack on Khan’s religion and claims that his rise is due only to the dearth of talent in Pakistan, which note should be given to the fact that Khan is actually English. When questioned about his retaliatory intentions come fight night, Khan simply responded, “We’re going to go in there and box him and make him look silly.” When pushed for his prediction, Khan delivered a chilling warning, “Danny Garcia is going to get knocked out.”
When word reached Team Garcia, the undefeated superstar-on-the-rise Danny “Swift” Garcia chuckled, responding, “He’s predicting a knockout and I’m predicting a knockout so it’s going to be a good fight.” Garcia added, “If someone’s getting knocked out, it’s Khan. We’ve seen him knocked out before. You haven’t seen me knocked out because I can take a punch. Kendal Holt can punch and I took his best shot – a left hook – right on the chin. I ate it for breakfast.” Unapologetic for his team’s comments and looking forward only to walking the talk that his camp has dished out, the Philadelphia boxer-puncher Garcia offered these last words, “I respect what Khan has done in boxing and I know he’s fast but he leans in when he throws his punches and he doesn’t have good timing. I’ve got good timing. A jab and good timing will beat speed any day. And I’m accurate with my counter punches, so I know I’m gonna catch him.”

When all the dirt settles and all the dust clears from the pre-fight hype, these two top 10 fighters in the light welterweight division will have to square off with one another. All the talk leading up to the event, which has become the staple of event promotion, has left both men with lots of talk to walk, and with no room for defeat. Both men predicting knockouts and bent of proving that they are the best the light welterweight division has to offer, Amir “King” Kahn and Danny “Swift” Garcia are on a collision course for an event properly titled “Fireworks.” Live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Saturday July 14 11pm ET/Tape-delayed on PT on HBO.
