Saturday Night Comeback Attempts! Corrales and Harper Win, Vazquez Falls Short

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Irish southpaw lightweight Gary “The Diva” Cully has probably ended the career of aging veteran Miguel Vazquez. Cully, 14-0 with eight knockouts, Nass, Ireland, cut Miguel Vazquez over the left eye, knocked him down twice in the third round, and brutally knocked him out with a one-two combination at 0:41 of the fifth round of a scheduled 10 rounder, on the undercard of Leigh Wood versus Michael Conlan at Nottingham Arena, Nottingham, United Kingdom, on Saturday, March 12, 2022. Referee Steve Gray counted Vazquez out, and would later wave off Wood’s bout with Conlan after Conlan was knocked out of the ring in the main event which followed the Cully versus Vazquez preliminary bout.

Cully, age 26, knocked out Vazquez, AKA “The Titere Puppet”, age 35, 44-11 with 17 knockouts, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, the former International Boxing Federation World Lightweight champion, and veteran of nine world title bouts, a loser of six of his last eleven bouts. Vazquez had won the vacant World Boxing Association Fedelatin Lightweight title by ten-round decision over Oliver Flores in Monterrey, Mexico, as recent as October 2021, and had stopped Isai Herandez in the seventh round in Monterrey in April 2021, but his latest comeback attempt, however gallant, was simply not to be. Vazquez lost a ten-round decision to Saul Alvarez in Mexico in 2008. Vazquez is 0-3 against British opponents in the United Kingdom, so his latest trip was not without precedent.

The comeback of former World Boxing Organisation World Featherweight champion Scott “The Real McCoy” Harrison after nine years of absence from the ring, never materialized. Harrison, 27-3-2 with 18 knockouts, Glasgow, Scotland, was left holding the boxing gloves and disappointed when his scheduled opponent never showed up.

Former World Boxing Association Super World Super Featherweight champion Jezreel Corrales, 26-4 with 10 knockouts, San Miguelito, Panama, won his third consecutive comeback bout at Arena Roberto Duran on a “Knocking Out Drugs” card, decisioning Mexican American 27-0 Miguel Madueno in Panama City, Panama. Scoring went three ways 117-108, 116-108 and 115-109, all for Corrales. Former female World Boxing Council and International Boxing Organization World Super Featherweight champion made a successful comeback one weight class up, winning a ten round decision over Yamila Belen Abellaneda to win the vacant World Boxing Association Female Inter-Continental Lightweight title. Harper was cut over the left eye in the third round. Scoring went 99-91, 99-91, 99-91 across the board for Harper on the Nottingham Arena undercard.
