ADONIS STEVENSON VS. TAVORIS CLOUD IS OFFICIAL FOR 9/28 ON HBO.
Newly crowned WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KO’s) has agreed to voluntarily defend his world championship against the hard hitting Tavoris Cloud (24-1, 19 KOs).
Stevenson, a former super middleweight contender that chose to move up in weight when a title shot presented itself to him on June 8 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, may currently be one of boxing’s biggest punchers as he showed by knocking out Chad Dawson with a powerful left hand in just 76 seconds for a knockout of the year candidate.
“This fight is totally different than the fight with Dawson,” Yvon Michel (Stevenson’s promoter) said. “Cloud is aggressive, likes to exchange, likes to fight. He was outsmarted when he fought Bernard Hopkins [in a March loss].”
Tavoris Cloud himself was the IBF world champion & had 4 successful defences behind him until he ran into the legendary Bernard Hopkins earlier this year and suffered an embarrassing shut out loss. A win over Adonis Stevenson would certainly catapult him back into the spotlight in style.
In order for this fight to have been made, Stevenson was granted an exception to fight Cloud rather than face mandatory challenger Tony Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KOs) of England immediately. However, this means the winner of the fight will be contractually obligated to face Bellew next. Bellew earned mandatory challenger status in May when he outpointing Isaac Chilemba in a rematch of their previous draw.
