Dmitriy Salita and Gabriel Tito Bracero Propose Barclays Center Dream Fight

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York, NY (February 22, 2013)–According to HBO commentator Harold Lederman at ringside, “Dmitriy Salita versus Gabriel Bracero would be a good matchup.” Can television make it happen?

Although Brooklyn welterweight contender Dmitriy Salta is still under a valid contract to fight Hector Camacho Jr. on April 27, 2013, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Camacho Jr.’s name doe not appear as Salita’s opponent on the internet on BoxRec or Makeafight.com, raising questions as to whether or not Camacho Jr. will be able to make 154 pounds and will actually show up for the Salita fight.

Ringside at Roseland Ballroom in New York City on February 21, 2013, for a DiBella entertainment fight card, Brooklyn welterweights Dmitriy Salita and Gabriel Tito Bracero proposed they fight each other on April 27, 2013, at Barclays Center in an all-Brooklyn extravaganza sure to sell thousands of tickets. Both fighters have strong area following, can sell out the Barclays Arena, and generate television excitement just by their undercard presence on the ten bout card, which will feature two world title bouts in the co-main events, welterweights Danny Garcia versus Zab Judah, and middleweights Peter Quillin versus Fernando Guerrero.

Bracero, who fights at 140, said he would fight Salita at a catch weight of 145. Salita, who fights at 154, indicated he was up for a match with Bracero if Camacho Jr. pulls out. Bracero is handled by Lou DiBella entertainment, and Salita is handled by Golden Boy Promotions.

According to Salita, “I’m focused on my bout with Hector Camacho Jr. He has not pulled out of the fight. I signed a contract. If that does not hold up, then we’ll see. I have expressed my interest in fighting Gabe before, we’ll see what makes the most sense.”

According to Gabriel Bracero’s co-manager Richie Komasso, “Camacho Jr. will not fight Dmitriy Salita because he cannot make weight at 154 pounds. The Hector Camacho Jr. versus Dmitriy Salita fight will not happen, and everyone in boxing knows it. After Camacho Jr.’s father (Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho Sr.) died, he was motivated for a few weeks. Now, there’s no chance Camacho Jr. can make weight. Gabriel Bracero deserve the chance to make money for his family. He sells a ton of tickets wherever he goes.”

Promoter Lou DiBella was adamant. DiBella wants to do business with Golden Boy Promotions at Barclays, if only his fighter is given the chance. “Golden Boy gives tickets away. I have the boy (Gabriel Bracero) from Sunset Park. Barclays Center needs to sell tickets. I can make money for Golden Boy. Let my fighter have the opportunity against one of Golden Boy’s fighters. Give my fighter the opportunity.”

Bracero has fought his career from 140 to 146 pounds, reaching a high weight of 146 pounds in a six round decision win over Ashantie Hendrickson in September 2009. Salita has fought his career between 140 and 154 pounds. Salita, weighing 150 pounds, last fought and won a six round bout over Brandon Hoskins at Barclays Center in October 2012. Salita would have to lose five pounds to make Bracero’s catch weight agreement, which seems very possible.

Given Salita has more power, and more of a knockout ratio than Bracero. Given, Bracero is a highly technical boxer who wins rounds with great skill as the busier fighter. Dmitriy Salita versus Gabriel Bracero would be an exciting fight at Barclays Center. Let’s hope Golden Boy Promotions and Lou DiBella Entertainment can make this bout happen and give the Brooklyn crowd at Barclays Arena their money’s worth.
