GENNADY GOLOVKIN BEATS DOWN OUTGUNNED GRZEGORZ PROKSA IN THE 5TH ROUND

By: UK Boxing Writer Jai Singh

At the Turning Stone Casino, New York – The unified IBO & WBA Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin (now 24-0, 21 KO’s) proved to be too much for the former two time European Middleweight Champion Grzegorz Proksa (falling to 28-2, 21 KO’s).

Proksa started the first round well with his extremely unusual and unpredictable style, circling Golovkin whilst tagging him with unorthodox shots consistently. During the final minute Proksa was dropped (which seemed more a slip) after a series of vicious shots from his heavy handed Kazakhstani foe.

This would set the tone for the rest of the fight as Proksa would have mild success by circling and throwing right hands until Golovkin would close in on the Pole against the ropes and unleash a barrage of bombs visibly hurting Proksa. In the fourth round, Proksa was sent down again but showed a great deal of grit and heart by getting up and fighting on as Golovkin loaded up his shots, beating him down. It was waved off in the fifth as a brutal right hand left Proksa flat on his face. In the post fight interview Golovkin expressed interest in fighting the likes of Andre Ward, Chad Dawson & Andre Dirrell. As for Grzegorz Proksa, a move back to the European scene would be the most logical option right now until he’s better equipped to step back up to the world stage again.
