European Heavyweight Dangers: Manuel Charr shot, Denis Boytsov Still in a Coma

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Essen, Germany (September 3, 2015)– Germany Biss TV video of Manuel Charr being taken away from Kebab by ambulance.

The dangers of being a heavyweight in Europe got clearer yesterday in Essen, Germany, when former top heavyweight contender Manuel Charr was shot at a kebab shop over a Facebook post posted by Lebanese gangs he was responding to. Charr posted a video on Facebook and challenged his detractors to settle the issue man to man. Instead the thugs showed up and tried to execute him. Charr, who is Lebanese and was born in Beirut, fights of out Cologne, Germany. No telling how long or even if his career can resume after this latest setback. Boxers have been shot in the past. Carlos Monzon was able to resume his career after being shot by his wife twice. Ernest M-16 Mateen was shot dead by his wife.

Charr, who was shot but whose injuries were not life threatening, underwent surgery at a local hospital and will survive. Charr, age 32, has a career record of 28-4 with 16 knockouts. He was stopped in the fourth round of a World Boxing Council World Heavyweight title bout with Vitaly Klitschko in September 2012.

Since losing to Vitaly in 2012, Charr won seven of ten comeback bouts. However, Charr has lost three of his last five bouts, to Alexander Povetkin, Johann Duhaupas, and most recently to Mairis Breidis by fifth round knockout in Grozny, Russia, only eleven days ago.

Charr will live, but another heavyweight contender is still fighting for his life. Denis Boytsov, 36-1 with 27 knockouts, a Russian fighting out of Hamburg, Germany, remains in unconscious a medically induced coma with severe head trauma and damaged hands after being found in a Berlin train tunnel on May 3. His wife Olga gave birth this past June.
