REAL COMBAT MEDIA WEEKLY BOXING REPORT – “Split Decision Edition“

Welcome back to another weekly edition of Real Combat Media Boxing Weekly Report “Split Decision” Edition.  I try to keep you up with what’s going on in the boxing world on a consistent basis.  This week we will feature fight recaps from last week’s PBC card on ESPN featuring Leo Santa Cruz vs Abner Mares and the Shane Mosley vs Ricardo Mayorga PPV Bout.  We will also feature news and notes on the latest word in boxing as well as prep you for the upcoming fight week for Money Mayweather and Andre Berto!

“To Live and Die in LA”….Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares put on a show this weekend on the PBC card on ESPN.  Santa Cruz has been taking a hit in boxing world for not stepping in the squared circle with a big name opponent.  In steps Abner Mares.  This was for bragging rights, who owns LA hands down!!! This featherweight title bout has been anticipated for the longest and it did not disappoint.  Mares came out firing from the opening bell.  Santa Cruz held his ground while returning fire!  Each shot was thrown with cruel intentions!  Neither fighter backing down.  Shit got real…real quick, but could Mares keep up that pace from round one to twelve?  Mares kept coming but Santa Cruz settled down, adapted, and then set the pace.  There were close rounds, but Santa Cruz was clearly in control.  He began to keep Mares on the outside with that wicked jab while coming forward.  Santa Cruz landed the cleaner and more effective shorts.  Mares was game though.  This bout could easily be fight of the year.  For now Santa Cruz owns the rights to LA!  He pulled out a majority decision (it should’ve been a unanimous one).  One judge had it 114 to 114.  He was on some CJ Ross ish!!!!

In the co-feature of the PBC card on ESPN Julio Cesar Ceja squared off with Hugo Ruiz for the vacant interim junior featherweight title.  Ruiz was Santa Cruz’s mandatory but Santa Cruz was busy with Mares that night, leaving Ruiz battling Ceja for the title. This bout was off the chain too.  The first couple of rounds was up for grabs but then Ruiz dropped Ceja in the third round with a nasty left hook.  Ceja was in deep water with Ruiz crackin’ him with right hands at the end of the third round.  I didn’t think he was going to make it out of that round but he did.  Going into the fifth round Ruiz was ahead in the fight but Ceja dropped Ruiz with a left hook of his own.  Ruiz got up but Ceja got him out of there!!!

Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga laced up Saturday at the Forum in LA.  In their first meeting in 2008 Mosley took out Mayorga with a second or two left in the fight.  This weekend they were looking to repeat the exciting action that they produced just seven years ago.  Whenever Mayorga is involved there is always action before, during and after the fight.  Leading up to the fight Mayorga slapped Mosley’s girlfriend on the ass…lol.  Classic Mayorga.  In Saturday night’s bout Mosley showed flashes of the old Shane.  Hands are still quick as shit and the power is always on display.  Mayorga who came into the fight overweight and looked like he undertrained showed that he still has an iron chin.  Mosley controlled the fight.   Mayorga was having his best round in the sixth until Mosley hit him with a vicious body shot that put him down with a second or two left in the round.  #Gameover!

Fight week for Mayweather and Berto is rapidly approaching.  Showtime All Access kicked off the first episode for the fight.  Berto looked to be in hella shape.   This is by far the biggest stage and fight of his career and he is putting in the work like it is.  One thing about Berto…he ALWAYS come to fight!  Ain’t no punk in him!  Money May is Money as always.  Nothing new to him.  Same shit different toilet!!!  Can’t wait to see this fight.  This will be an action packed event.  Berto is the most athletic fighter that Money has faced in years, probably ever!  Berto brings speed, power, and heart.  A week and a half left and we  see.  I will be there covering the fight!

Sleeper fight of the upcoming week….Badou Jack and George Groves.  Jack and Groves will face off for the WBC super middleweight title on the undercard of Mayweather/Berto on September 12th at the MGM Grand.  Jack is coming off of a hell of a performance when he dismantled Anthony Dirrell and took his belt.  Groves is coming into the fight on a two fight win streak since suffering his only two losses both to Carl Froch.

WORD IS….!!!!

Timothy Bradley has fired his long time trainer Joel Diaz!  Shocking move!!!  Didn’t see this coming but this is boxing and the shots that you don’t see coming is the one that gets you and this is the one that got me.  They seem to have had a great relationship but business is business.  WOW!!!

Shane Mosley put up a million dollars of his own money…. for his own fight against Ricardo Mayorga this past weekend.  I heard that only a crowd of about 3500 people showed up to the Forum for the fight.  From my understanding the fight needed to do at least 35,000 PPV Buys for Mosley to break even.  I hope he comes out on top.  I never want to see a great man like Mosley take an L like that.

Speaking of Shane Mosley, word iz he might be facing Juan Manual Maquez next!  Now that shit will be off the damn chain!!!  Two future HOFers going at it at this point in their careers!  This would be PPV worthy.  I’m with that all day!!!!

Premiere Boxing Championship boxing on ESPN put up record numbers for the Leo Santa Cruz vs Abner Mares fight.  I heard it peaked at 1.6 million viewers for the anticipated matchup between the two.  This was the third PBC fight on ESPN and it turned out to be the biggest of the three.  PBC is doing it’s thang!!!!  #ThankyouAlHaymon  #Freeboxingforall

Ronda Rousey and Money Mayweather……Nevermind…LOL.  This don’t even deserve anyone’s attention.  The media need to cut that out.  She is a big girl and can make it on her own without the help of Money May.

Andre “SOG” Ward may end up on the undercard of Cotto/Canelo.  Ward and Cotto are both Roc Nation fighters so this wouldn’t surprise me.  The PPV Card is scheduled for November 21st in Vegas.  This would be great for Ward and the PPV Card.

Nicholas Walters to face Yuriorkis Gamboa @ 130lbs…..MAYBE!  Word iz that Walters and Gamboa could face off by the end of the year.  That would be huge!

Danny Garcia may be taking on Robert Guerrero.  Rumor has it that Garcia vs Guerrero could take place this fall @ 147.  That would be a great matchup for both guys.  This will be Garcia’s second fight at 147 but Guerrero has a lot to prove and is always a game fighter.  Honestly I would take Guerrero in this fight.  I hope this fight gets made!

AB you know….About Billions, Always Business…Adrien Broner has been looking good and trimmed lately for his upcoming bout October 3rd.  Broner has stated that he will not be talking to the media….no interviews no nothing.  He had a statement read at the press conference for his upcoming bout by a man named “White Ticket”….lol.  He vowed silence after getting into a twitter war of words with ESPN’s Dan Rafael which was funny as hell.  Broner’s next fight will take place at home in Cincinnati against former WBA light welterweight champion Khabib Allakhverdiev.  They will be fighting for the vacant WBA light welterweight title.
