Kendall Holt

Kendall Holt vs. Tim Coleman: Fact or Fiction

By: Tommy Dangerously, MMA & Boxing Reporter

On March 16th, 2012 at Morongo Casino & Resorts in Cabazon, CA, Kendall Rated “R” Holt vs. Tim “Pit-bull” Coleman will collide at welterweight. This bout will be televised on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights. It is a do or die match up for each of the two combatants involved, because both Holt and Coleman lost their last outings, respectively. They each lost to top upcoming young prospects. In many aspects, it’s a fight that could’ve happened at 140 a year or so ago on different circumstances. However, it will be going down this Friday, the 16th, for a bit more than bragging rights.

Tim Coleman, the 26 year old native of Baltimore, is a more boisterous of the two, who often has very colorful and interesting things to say about his opponents. He is a hard hitting orthodox fighter with something to prove especially to Kendall Holt who will be his biggest marquee name to date. Although Coleman doesn’t have a star studded filled resume, he has worked with more than his share of some of the elite pros of his time; Oscar De Le Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Corey Spinks, Alfred Angulo and Stevie Forbes are those fighters.

I had a chance to meet Tim when he was sparring with Hatton before the November 08’ Paulie Malignaggi fight. Tim is a very likeable young man and has a true desire to succeed in boxing. When I mentioned seeing his latest fight on Showtime’s Show-box series, where he lost to then top prospect James De La Rosa, He simply sighed and told me,” I wish I had that one back.” When I poked at the style in De La Rosa calling him a cutie, he offered nothing distasteful in reply showing nothing but class and a flash of swagger in his toothy grin. The man they call “Pit Bull” is a pure bred brought up and trained thoroughly in the hurt business. He is primed for his shot to shine like a disco ball. He has future champion written all over him.  Tim exhibits a record of 19-2 (5) KO’s. He doesn’t have a high knock out percentage, but he has been known to put a debilitating lock on his foes and he is “Pit Bull in” vicious!

Kendall Holt, on the other hand, is a different situation altogether.  He is the ex WBO Super lightweight champion and been in his share of championship matches. Fresh from an upset loss against top prospect and now WBO Inter-Continental Light welter weight, Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia. This fight took place on the Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson under-card. The fight was a very stale one sided affair by the younger Garcia who seemed timid the whole 1st half of the fight and was content on just countering the older more experienced Holt. In the second half Garcia took more chances and began to open up a bit still being very cautious of the still dangerous veteran with power in both hands. Holt appeared to be looking for the one home run shot that just never came. I’m not sure if it was the pre-fight press conference in which the father of young Danny Garcia venomously attacked Kendall repeatedly with no regard for respect. Once, Kendall asked while he was at the podium,”Damn can I talk please?” As if the fight we’re between the father and Kendall himself.

Was it Father Time catching up with the 30 year old Patterson, New Jersey native? Or did he just apply the wrong strategy for the wrong fight? No matter what the belief or certain politic involved, the fact of the matter is he lost once again bringing his record to a very nice 27-5 (15) KO’s.  But as of today’s view, his back is up against the wall. This is a must win fight and he holds almost every advantage regarding height, reach, and strength. However, his desire has been questionable and this is the one element that we in the boxing community, the fans, and the networks all would like to know. Kendall Holt has been in the spotlight several times before.  He knows how to deal with adversity and how to take a loss; being a husband, father, and role model for kids and parents in his community alike.  It’s how he deals with a younger and perhaps hungrier challenger that is the question at hand.

This fight has all the intrigue of a main event card. From the flashy monikers, to the size difference, or the age difference of a freshman vs. a senior. Only this isn’t high school ladies and gentleman it’s a business, the prize fighting business to be exact, and the winner gets a hall pass to fight another day.

Is this going to be a Stephen King thriller about the ferocious “Pit Bull” from the bad streets of Baltimore named Tim Coleman or is it going to be the box office hit “Platoon” starring Kendall Rated “R” Holt? I know where I’m going to be on Friday afternoon folks, these aren’t your average club fighters; these are guys on the verge of greatness.  These two warriors want to break the “motha” down! Until next time boxing fanatics I’m Tommy Dangerously signing off…
